Dinosaur Zoo For iPad Review

If visiting a real life Jurassic Park has always been a dream, Dinosaur Zoo will bring you as close to the real thing as possible – without turning you into a T-Rex’s lunch.

Who wouldn't want to visit a real Jurassic park? But then again, who wants to be raptor-feed? If dinosaurs appeal, there is a new educational app, Dinosaur Zoo, on the App Store worth checking out.

It lets users travel, from the safety of their iPad, to a virtual zoo so lifelike they will will be yanking their finger back before the Monolophosaurus snaps it off.

The app offers up six dinosaurs – on land, in flight and in the sea – and places them in rich photo-realistic settings, with full 3d animation, for users to poke at, interact with, and observe.

Each creature from the murky past has its own section of the zoo, and a tap will reveal some easy-on-the eyes fact-pages about it.

Users navigate with a map that looks just like the one handed to visitors of your local zoo. But, here's where the app runs into some trouble.

The map works perfectly with a nice pinch-to-zoom feature. In fact, the navigation system is flawless, as is the rest of the GUI.

Yet there are 20 crates promising dinos to come, but only six extinct reptiles to visit now. The app is new, though, and the animations are near-cinematic quality and likely complex to make.

Dotnamestudios calls this a "starter pack" and promises, as does the map, much more to come. Hopefully, that will be included in the $2.99 cost, which is more than fair if the additional creatures roll out in stages as free updates.

If they come out as in-app purchases, however, the dinosaur-to-dollar ratio, if not the replay value, will stay low. And, more content is all that stands between Dinosaur Zoo and a permanent spot at the top of the educational apps chart.

That said, this is a kid's educational app, and children thrive on repetition, and they seem love all things dino-related – just ask Hollywood.

I have a "seven-and-three-quarters-year-old" son who has seen every dinosaur app on the App Store because, well, he's an almost-eight year old boy.

Other apps have more breadth and more depth, but none have more appeal. These animations are so lifelike that he and his friends were laughing as much from enjoyment as they were from bravado to mask a whiff of fear when the Euoplocephalus slashed his long armoured tail right at their faces for poking him.

What Dinosaur Zoo lacks in this first release, in terms of substance, is more than made up for with style and does what any good edutainment app ought to – hide the fact that kids are learning anything at all. It's dinolicious.

The Google Goggles team has worked with The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles to "Goggles-enable" their permanent collection of paintings. You can use the Google Goggles app on your phone to take a photo of a painting from the collection and instantly access information about it from the Getty's mobile-optimized website and the rest of the web. It's possible to fit only a small amount of information on the wall next to a painting but visitors with Goggles can now enjoy the full story online.

Watch Out Danger Ahead Review

A simplistic but interesting take on the platforming genre.

Watch Out Danger Ahead is a minimalist platformer in which users assume control of a ball and must roll it across stages, traversing jumps and overcoming geometric puzzles.

Other than its unusual title, the first thing that stands out about Watch Out Danger Ahead is its simplistic, minimalistic visuals. Its creator – Pop Bottom Games – has in fact spared expense when it comes to this app’s graphics. But this is not a necessarily a bad thing. Watch Out Danger Ahead, despite its simplistic and even primitive visuals, has somewhat of an art direction, even if it’s mostly limited to plain geometry and use of color.

The simple graphics go hand in hand with the equally simple gameplay at the foundation of Watch Out Danger Ahead. Gamers tilt their iOS device to roll their ball either left or right. By tapping the jump button, they can cause the nameless ball to jump, and by tapping the zoom button, they can give their ball a boost. Players are limited to rolling, jumping and boosting their ball across the level – that’s all there is to this simple platformer.

But don’t assume that Watch Out Danger Ahead is an easy game. There is certainly some challenge to be hand here. Beyond simply rolling a ball around, the true gameplay here comes from the challenge of manipulating the ball around chasms and other geometric puzzles, such as 90-degree inclines. Indeed, the game is actually fairly challenging and requires mastering its controls to progress very far at all.

That said, the intuitive control scheme is somewhat of a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s a control system that works well and lacks overwhelming complexity. However, at times, the controls can be frustrating. Getting the exact feel for the tilting, which is required in scenarios involving precision, can be quite difficult. If players stick with it, it does get easier. But it takes some time to master a control scheme that at first glance appears ridiculously straightforward.

Watch Out Danger Ahead’s approach to the platforming genre is simple and its concept is even kind of original. While this is no Mario, it’s a decent, unique twist on platforming.

The Walt Disney Publishing Division has just released Disney Comics, a free app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Given an iBookstore bookshelf look, the initial outing contains fifty titles ranging from free to in app purchases that range between $0.99 and $3.99 for a themed collection. Titles include both old and new Disney characters including those from Toy Story and Cars along with old favorites like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. It will work in both portrait and landscape modes.

The new app offers features like auto-play and sound effects, along with a variety of modes of reading. Disney intends to digitally re-publish individual stories as well as graphic novels from their massive collection of older content along with newer titles. Disney creates over 25,000 pages of original comic pages per year and delivers them to over one billion readers. That’s a lot of readers, to be honest. Whew. The app is live in the App Store right now, so head on over and check it out.

8 Bit Rally Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: RALLY RUSH
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

This old school arcade racer has some surprisingly deep mechanics that are sure to please iOS racing junkies.

Admittedly, I’ve been on a retro game kick lately. I don’t know if it’s the nostalgia factor, the easy learning curve, or the addictive replayability that they offer, but I sure am a sucker for new games that try to mimic experiences from the early days of gaming. Don’t be fooled by 8 Bit Rally’s retro look though. This game packs a serious amount of entertainment value beneath its vintage shell, and the soundtrack is made up of some seriously awesome chip tunes.

8 Bit Rally is a classic style arcade racer where players have to race around a variety of scenic tracks across the globe. Each race is made up of multiple laps, and players compete for cash prizes against various levels of A.I. opponents. The game offers three difficulty levels so that all sorts of gamers can enjoy the experience without getting too frustrated. The controls are spot on, and even though the game’s graphical style isn’t realistic, there is still a great sense of speed when handling the cars. There are two control options (touch and tilt), and they both worked without a hitch. I’m usually not a fan of tilt, but in 8 Bit Rally I always felt like I was in control of my car. I found the collision detection when passing competitors a little strange, but after a few races I was able to determine a safe passing distance. The game even has some a bit of depth with its garage mode. Between each race players have the option to paint their car, upgrade mechanical aspects (transmission, engine, wheels), and even buy totally new vehicles.

The graphics and sounds are styled to imitate the feel of an old arcade game, but they certainly surpass any old arcade cabinet I’ve tinkered with. The charming retro graphics look extremely crisp, and they remain fluid even during some of the more intense racing action. The pinnacle of the game is the original soundtrack. There are some kicking retro tunes in 8 Bit Rally that really got me pumped up to race. I don’t want to belittle the gameplay because it is suitably entertaining, but the jams really bring the experience to another level.

8 Bit Rally brings the total package in terms of retro style revivals. The graphics, sound, and gameplay are all top notch, and even though the game is obviously inspired by older titles, Photon Creations managed to add their own depth and charm to arcade racing. I think the only downside to the overall experience is the repetitive nature, but that’s more a flaw of the racing genre itself. As far as arcade racers go, it doesn’t get much better than 8 Bit Rally.
