Knowledge is power so they say. Excluding huge wealth, I suspect the elusive ‘they’ are right. Quora won’t provide great financial fortunes (probably) but it will provide plenty of knowledge.

Providing a neat combination of social networking and knowledge, Quora allows users to ask people questions as well as answer other people’s queries. Over 60,000 topics are covered enabling users to search through thousands of different location based topics as well as anything else that may grip them.

Kind of like Wikipedia, it opens up a huge breadth of knowledge on everything from current affair issues to simply asking people what it’s like to be in their chosen career field. Users could even use it for relationship advice or tourism information for a specific area. It’s a fascinating insight into just how much knowledge each and every person may have. An instant reminder that everyone is knowledgeable about something, even if they don’t yet realise it.

Quora is a free app so why not give it a shot today? It makes an entertaining change from the likes of Wikipedia.

Having been available on the PC/Mac since 2003, popular MMORPG Conquer Online is set to make its debut on the iPad this fall.

Offering some pretty conventional but no doubt fun MMO features, Conquer Online comes with numerous original classes and skills, guilds and clans, a mentor system and even the ability to get married and divorced within the game. There will be six playable classes in all including the Monk, Ninja, Warrior, Archer, Trojan and Taoist, plus a plethora of different skills to pursue. Players will be able to build and furnish their own in-game house and there’s PvP available for the more aggressive gamer. Presumably some in-app purchases will feature somewhere to help out those who want to progress faster.

What’s not to love about this combination? It’s difficult to not be pleased with anything that’s free after all. Check out the trailer below. We’ll be sure to keep up to date with all the relevant information nearer to Conquer Online‘s release.

Stinger Foosball League Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: SURPRISINGLY FUN
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

While it seems like a tough one to pull off on the iPhone, this one’s actually done a fairly good job of recreating foosball on a touch-screen device.

Foosbal, or “table-football” as us Brits often refer to it as, seemed like a pretty unusual one for a developer to bring across to iOS. It’s a game that relies heavily on not only a very tactile style of playing, but also on the close-quarters of an opponent for banter and a lot of the enjoyment. I was unsure that it could really work on an iPhone, against an AI opponent.

First impressions weren’t great, at the menu screen I was greeted with an extremely loud and rather annoying bleep each time I pressed something — as if I really needed some sort of confirmation that I had in fact touched the screen. However, my initial opinion improved upon turning the volume down and looking through the menus. Not only do we have the standard ‘first-to-five’ game of foosball with single games, tournaments and local multiplayer, but also a collection of mini-games. One of which is entitled “Hardest Kick.” I was immediately taken back to my childhood days of aggressively spinning handles in the hope that I’d catch the sweet-spot and send the ball careering across the table.

One of the best things about this game, though, is the variety of control options. Players can kick automatically or by manual screen touches, there’s even a motion control option — and they all work great, it’s really a matter of personal preference as to which one is used. Unlike a lot of games on iOS, where despite the options, there’s only ever one that feels right. As far as general gameplay goes, though, it’s pretty much as close to table-football as it could be. Just a lot less expensive, and a whole lot more portable. The only thing that seemed to be missing was those awkward moments where the ball gets stuck in a place where it can’t be reached, along with the resultant table-nudging. Which, I guess, from a development point of view is a good thing to alleviate. The AI opponents are actually not bad to play against either, although an online multiplayer mode would’ve made a very nice addition. One that would’ve served a much greater purpose than the ‘create a team’ portion; I’ve always found ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ to be sufficient on Foosball tables.

I was genuinely surprised, however, at how much fun I had with Stinger Foosball League. Perhaps it was my pre-game skepticism, but being able to play foosball with technological advancements such as instant-replays when scoring goals is actually rather enjoyable. Then there’s the close up shots of goal-scoring players jiggling about on their poles, which had me giggling a little each and every time.

Developer Confidential: Toy Studio, Part 2

See Part 1 of our special developer interview with Toy Studio right here.

To understand the roots of “Monster Slider” you must first back track to when the game’s design was originally conceived. Community Manager Ryan Olson helped fill in the blanks:

“Rob Lockhart, the game designer, was at a game design conference called Games Learning Society in Madison, Wisconsin. He was thinking of god games like Black and White and The Sims and what would a god game look like in its simplest form. Directly shifting the world to guide a creature to a goal was the result. When Rob got back to the studio, he gathered up some odds and ends in the office to create a paper prototype of his idea. Once some of the gameplay was tweaked, then the game went into full production…”

As great as having a unique idea and vision for a product is, only through iteration and collaboration can these kinds of concepts make the jump from the page to the screen.  This is where prototyping comes into play.  Despite the word “prototype,” implying some sort of playable product, different designers choose to present their concepts in different ways.  Each studio is different and apparently Toy Studio is no exception to the rule.

“The original paper prototype we made of some gameplay options was something to experience! Rob, the designer, was acting as the game AI creating puzzles from scraps of paper and moving the monster we had to represent Squishy in front of us. He would bring in people from their desk and sit them down to play out a few games. There was a bowl of jellybeans in the meeting room and then Rob put them on some tiles and we had portals. Just like that. Squishy's Revenge was just scraps of paper, candy and odds and ends from some board games we have in the office that turned into an original game…” — Rob Lockhart, Game Designer

And just like that, a game was born.  Shortly thereafter a tight knit collection of three were tasked with bringing a glorified break room mess to life.  With the help of only a single designer, coder and artist, the product leapt for the design document page and into existence.  But not all was well in the world of rotating tiles.

Stay tuned, for tomorrow we finish our epic tale, and learn more about Toy Studio’s latest effort, Squishy’s Revenge!

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: A MUST-HAVE FOR AUDIOPHILES
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Discover great new music or find out more about the music you already love with this visually attractive musical information aggregator

GrooveBug, just released this summer, is a powerful music aggregator of content from Echonest (the increasingly popular music intelligence platform), YouTube, Wikipedia, and other public sources, driven by a custom-programmed engine. It's been called "the Flipboard experience, but for music", and it claims to reduce or eliminate the need to monitor different channels of information to keep up with favorite bands and musical artists. It does all this in an intuitive, "magazine-style" format that highlights attractive images from cover art, concerts, and artist photos. I don't really follow any bands but I think that GrooveBug really shines when it comes to turning you on to new music. Unlike the iTunes Genius service, GrooveBug also provides relevant background information from various different sources, as well as different media formats, for those who like to know more about the music they listen to, where it comes from, what inspired it, and even where to buy tickets for the next concert.

GrooveBug starts by analyzing music stored on the iPad (I had to transfer some over to try it out), then sorts the artists it finds into various genres. Start by touching a specific genre for a surprisingly well-written description, along with example artists that typify that genre. Touch an artist and get a bio displayed over a slowly cycling background of artist images, taken from public sources. Swipe the screen and get a discography with the option to preview (and hopefully buy) additional songs via iTunes. Keep swiping and users will see YouTube videos, news articles, Twitter content, and finally an interactive listing of similar artists, represented by a cool 45" record metaphor.

The only thing which tripped me up a few times was the "Home" button, situated in the lower right hand corner of the screen; for some reason I never looked there first when I wanted to return to the app's main screen, instead of swiping over and over again to get out of the wormhole I'd just traveled into. Therein lies an inherent weakness of the drill-down philosophy this app uses; it's only possible to travel vertically through the hierarchy, not travel across. However, the app's visually appealing interface and highly engaging content makes that a very minor problem.

I agree with commenters in the iTunes Store and elsewhere on the 'net: GrooveBug is definitely one to watch. The interface feels just a tiny bit rough but it's a fantastic start to something that has a lot of potential growth. And unlike Flipboard, which casts the aggregation net wide instead of deep, GrooveBug might have created something sustainable and satisfying by focusing on a subject which has a lot of relevant content.

Books, we love them. So, apparently, do iOS users, bringing the Books category up to the second most popular category in the App Store (the first being Games, of course). Each week, we dip our toes into the book app waters so you don’t have to. Here are our four picks of the week.

March of the Dinosaurs looks to be a glorious nonfiction look into the world of our saurian ancestors, by the makers of The Elements and Solar System for iPad, TouchPress. This book features realistic 3D dinosaurs that can be rotated and zoomed, video sequences and an optional narration, and over 65 pages of glorious Dino info across 12 chapters. Sign us up!

Classicly HD ~ 26,416 books and audiobooks. The ultimate library. Spreadsong, Inc. may have named this app, but we choose it for the content, not the unwieldy title. Classicly HD puts together 23,469 classic books in ebook format, which alone is cause for celebration. What makes this app stand out is the almost 3,000 audiobooks and 61 handpicked collections of books included as well. If you want to carry around a library the size of which would astonish most of the authors of these classic books, this is the app for you.

We’re constantly on the lookout for free ebooks, and Kindle eBooks purports to do alot of the legwork for us. The app gives users streamlined access to lists of Kindle free or inexpensive books, in either a top ten list or a list of ALL of them. Users can then send links to these books via email, so they or their friends can download to their actual Kindle or Kindle app. This seems pretty useful!

Science Fiction fans rejoice, as our next pick has 100 stories from this popular genre to share with them. Users can thrill to the 100 SciFi Stories by the likes of HG Wells, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Murray Leinster, and Jules Verne – classic authors in the genre. The app developers promise more of the short stories, novelettes and full length novels in the days to come, all from the SF field.

On almost the opposite end of the genre continuum sits the Jane Austen – Fan Kit, $0.99 app that includes a daily Jane Austen quote, almost every published work by this famous author, a “movie of the week” feature to suggest an adaptation of one of her works, and even a trivia game with questions about Jane Austen’s life, books, quotes and movie adaptations.

Though the aesthetic of every comic strip or comic book can differ very greatly, not everyone has the artistic talent to be able to put pen (or pencil) to paper and sketch out the characters and environments needed for a complete comic. Kabaam to the rescue! Kabaam helps users take images from their own photo albums and turn them into short comics with a few swipes of their fingers.

Kabaam includes everything needed to create a fun and creative comic. First, users take a photo from their album and load it into the app. Once loaded into the app, users can add all kids of different comic elements to the image. Titles, large letter sound effect text, and several different types of speech bubbles. Users can change the position, rotation, size and orientation of each element.

Multiple images can be added to each comic and each photo can have it’s own set of comic elements. The only restriction users will find in this app is that there is no way to change the orientation or size of the comic boxes. The images automatically load into slightly rectangular boxes, and while the user has the ability to resize and move the images within these boxes, they can’t changes the size or shape of the boxes themselves. Depending on how many images are added to each comic, the comic will be in one long strip or a stacked grid.

Other than the ability to change the size of comic boxes, this is a fairly full-featured app that provides enough features and variety that users can create to their heart’s content. There aren’t so many options that they app becomes unwieldily on a mobile device, though. There are also lots of options for both importing images and exporting final comics. Users can even import images from Facebook – a nice addition to a photo app like this. Users will have fun with this app and will have an easy time sharing their finished work.

Couch-to-5K

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: AND I WAS RUNNING
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

An easy to use and interactive Couch-to-5K app, Active.com’s interpretation is a simple and encouraging way to get off the couch and on the run. A great addition to your iOS device before winter hibernation.

So, recently I noticed that I had started to develop that distinctive computer guy shape, and as a member of the female persuasion, that übersexy slouch and roll looks even better on me. By better, I mean worse and by worse I mean shockingly awful. So what better opportunity to test a Couch-to-5K app then to get me out from behind my keyboard and into the sunshine with aerobic activity? I am happy to report that Active.com's Couch-to-5k has gotten me on to the treadmill and running (technically not outdoors yet…baby steps).

In Active.com's Couch-to-5k, the runner can choose a coach to guide thme through the program: Constance, a couch-to-5k alumna that is upbeat sounding but the most minimally involved persona; Billie, a personal trainer that really sounds like a personal trainer; or Sergeant Block, a cartoony and heavy-handed persona. For 20 to 30 minutes, three times a week, for 9 to 10 weeks the runner can track progress on the iPhone or iPod, listen to music and sync the app with playlists stored in the device, make notes, and even have the option to share progress on Facebook or on the Active.com Trainer site. The Couch-to-5k app even includes GPS to track running routes, distance and pace for the iPhone (3Gs and newer). Active.com's Couch-to-5K even makes signing up for local 5Ks easy with links directly to the sites and discounts for going through the app to sign up.

The app itself is easy to use. The interface is straightforward and the graphics and organization makes it visually interesting yet keeps it simple, especially for having so many features. Having the option to choose between character voices is great and being able to repeat the runs makes easing off of the couch and onto the pavement that much nicer.

It would be better to have a shuffle function for the playlist and a 30 second notice or warning, maybe a ping or a vibrate before the coach gives the next direction. Us treadmill runners can't really change speed that abruptly without risking that awkward high knee hop and arm flail as the fear of tripping and then being flung across the room at high speeds washes over you.

Activ.com's Couch-to-5K is one of my favorite couch-to-5k apps, with it's customizable features, interactivity, and well rounded interface I may actually stay off the couch this time. Well, except when I have to write reviews and watch new episodes of House.
