Make Surreal Images and Learn About Color With Pixl

Remember those posters that were pretty big in the 90′s? The ones made up of a bunch of teeny tiny images that, when positioned correctly, created a slightly abstract-looking larger image (i.e. Star Wars stills created a portrait of Darth Vader)? Pixl is a photo app designed by Innoiz to do something very similar, just without the pictures-within-a-picture concept.

With Pixl, users can take existing photos and run them through a filter with variable settings that will reduce all of the textures and shades down to basic shapes and flat colors. In other words, instead of using a full image that’s predominantly blue (for the sake of argument) as blue for a larger image, it creates a blue box or circle for the same purpose. It’s the same basic idea, though. In either case, it results in a stylized abstraction of the image.

Users are also able to take images from within the app, so if they’re out walking and see something that would make a good Pixl image they can open it up and get right to work. Photos can then be saved for later viewing in both portrait and landscape orientations. It sounds a little like a gimmicky photo filter app, and depending on the user that might be all it amounts to, but it can also be an incredibly useful learning tool.

Specifically, Pixl seems to be designed more for artists or art students than for someone looking to mess around with their vacation photos. In breaking an image down into basic shades, it allows users to study the way colors react to one another when in close proximity. It also makes it easier to scrutinize color values without visual distractions like texture to get in the way. In short, it’s Color Theory.

Anyone looking to have fun making the pictures on their phone look artsy, or those who could use a little help with their swatches, can download Pixl from the App Store right now.

Victors United:
Arm Chair Commanders can now play something when the significant other threatens to go outside and perhaps have a life. Victors United is a 24hr turn based strategy game in which players try to take over the world, Risk style. Connect to Facebook and challenge those “friends” that were added to help out with farming duties, or just trash talk the opponents. Either way, this is a globe spanning game and will require the best of tactics to rise to the top of the leaderboards!

Crimson: Steam Pirates:
What happens when Jordan Weisman (creator of MechWarrior, Crimson Skies, and Shadowrun) gets together with Bungie Aerospace over a few cold brews? Easy, they design a game for iOS just for the fun of it. Players will command a Steampunk inspired fleet in this turn-based strategy action game. There are dozens of ships, subs, and airships to command as players try to lay waste to the evil pirate, Thomas Blood. Elegant, fun, and challenging are served up right here.

Super Drill Panic:
Super Drill Panic is bringing retro arcade fun to iOS. The game features various levels in which the player must grab as many coins and items as possible, all while running away from a boulder that wants to paint the walls red with the life blood of the main character. Of course a boulder is far too easy to escape from, but lasers, razors, and falling blocks add to the challenge. The game may start easy, but it will soon test the patience of all good gamers.

Star Legends (3D MMO):
Read that title one more time and let it sink in! That’s right, an MMO right on iOS, and even better – it’s set to a SciFi theme. Star Legends will take players on a journey through hijacked space ships, alien infested asteroids, and mysterious science labs in need of exploring. All this while leveling and playing with other people from all over the globe, even on a 3G connection. Best of all, all players connect to the same game world, so there is no need to make multiple characters to play with all those new friends. Why can’t PC MMOs get this right?

Bounce the Bunny:
Take one crazy rabbit, add in some magical bouncy bubbles, and let the insane fun begin. Just give the bunny a kick to get him going, and help him bounce his way to the end of the level, ever mindful to not let him fall into the deadly waters. With over 60 levels, unlockable upgrades, unique and colorful worlds, and so much more, what more could a gamer on the go want? Sometimes, simple addictions are all anyone needs to get through the long, agonizing workday.

The Secret of Chateau de Moreau Review

By
on September 2nd, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: A MARVELOUS MYSTERY
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

The Secret of Chateau de Moreau puts players in the shoes of suspect-turned-detective Antoine as he tries to discover the truth about his foster father’s murder and clear his name. It’s a very tight, well-made mystery title that should delight fans of the genre.

Developer: Four Thirty Three
Price: $0.99 (On sale; normal price $4.99)
Version Reviewed: 1.0.0

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.06 out of 5 stars

Who doesn’t love a good mystery? In The Secret of Chateau de Moreau, players take on the role of Antoine, whose wealthy foster father has passed away under mysterious circumstances and left all of his wealth to Antoine. In order to claim his inheritance, Antoine also has to clear his name—and this is where the detective work comes in. To solve the murder mystery, players have to question other characters, solve puzzles, and search for clues. It’s a very well-designed game and well put-together. Mystery fans should really enjoy this charming app.

The actual gameplay is reminiscent of other point-and-click mystery games. As Antoine, players wander around the chateau searching for clues. The chateau is mostly represented as a floor plan; upon entering a specific room, players can search it for clues or talk to any characters present. Rooms are presented as single images; within a room movement is impossible. While exploring the chateau I was vaguely reminded of the Phoenix Wright games. Interactions are fairly basic, with a menu of dialogue options provided and the other characters responding accordingly. There’s a sizable cast of other characters, including Antoine’s siblings and the chateau’s staff.

While exploring, puzzles will occasionally appear. These “puzzles” range from the very easy examples in the beginning of a game (entering a combination into a lock, or spinning a wheel) to somewhat more complex operations later.

Despite this being a mystery game, for the most part the story unfolds without relying too much on the player’s intuition. The chateau isn’t enormous, and for the most part the game leaves little doubt as to what the player’s next task is. In some ways this is good; not knowing what to do next and wandering aimlessly is my least favorite part of the mystery game experience, and I’ve yet to encounter that in this app.

As for the app’s more mundane aspects, everything works fine. While there’s auto-resume, there’s no auto-save, so cautious players should remember to save the game often. But the app has no real problems. Artwork and sound effects both work well to create atmosphere and add to the story.

There’s no denying that The Secret of Chateau de Moreau is an impressive game. Over 40 endings (even if many of those endings end in Antoine’s death or arrest!), nice art, 100 puzzles, a complex story…The Secret of Chateau de Moreau scores on many counts. Anyone who enjoys mystery games definitely needs to check out The Secret of Chateau de Moreau.

Quarrel Deluxe Review

By
on September 2nd, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: WEAPONIZED WORDPLAY
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Quarrel takes the humble word game and applies it to a whole new type of strategic gameplay.

Developer: Indiagames Limited

Price: $4.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.13 out of 5 stars

Word games are almost universally enjoyed by the iOS community and there are countless word games in the app store that challenge player’s wits and language skills by having them arrange or rearrange random letters into the longest most complicated word possible. The touch controls on iOS devices also make them a popular platform for digitized versions of popular board games. Quarrel takes what makes both of these genres so popular and combines them to create an extremely compelling game that engages players on multiple levels and keep them coming back for more.

At it’s heart, Quarrel is a word game where players take sets of eight random letters with point values and try to arrange them to make the word with the highest score possible. This wordplay is then wrapped up in the trappings of the classic board game, Risk, where players vie for control of predefined territories on a game map by strategically moving and reenforcing armies. Quarrel presents the player with a game map that is split up into territories. The player must strategically move their units to gain control of all the territories on the map. To take a territory from an opponent, the player can attack that territory from an adjacent territory that contains the player’s units. In the board game Risk, the number of units in each territory determine how many dice each player will roll and the highest numbers rolled win the battle. In Quarrel, the number of units on each territory determine how many letters the player can use to form a word from a group of eight letters. For example: If the player has four units on their territory and the opponent they are attacking has seven units in its territory, then the player can only use four of the eight random letters to form a word while the opponent can use up to seven of the eight letters to form a longer word (likely worth more points). Both the player and the opponent use the same letters in each battle and whichever one creates the word with the highest score wins the battle and gains or retains control of the attacked territory. Ties go to whomever was fastest at forming a word.

Players must move their units and attack their opponents strategically, and each of the game’s 12 different maps present a different strategic challenge. An eye for strategy and a mind like a dictionary will both aide players in this game. The game is won by taking control of all of the map’s territories and removing all of the opponent’s (there can be up to 3 opponents in each game, not including the player) units from the map.

This game is absolutely fabulous and super fun to play. There are some issues with the touch detection which can make it hard to touch and select letters quickly. This can be very frustrating because being the fastest to create a word is a huge advantage in this game. The most disappointing aspect of Quarrel, however, is the unfortunate lack of any kind of multiplayer component. There are several different game types, daily challenges, and even nine different AI opponents to battle but this game would be at it’s best when playing with other live players. Hopefully this feature will be included in a future release.

Even without a multiplayer mode, Quarrel is a phenomenal game. Frustrations aside, it is so enjoyable and very hard to put down. Strategy and word game fans will both find things to love about this game and players that enjoy both genres will be in heaven.

Gameloft Announce Back 2 School Sale

Gameloft has just announced an end of the summer/back to school sale on 8 of their most popular iOS titles. That means they’re all available for only $0.99 each.

Here’s the scoop on exactly what’s on offer:

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard: My pick of the bunch having loved it on the iPhone earlier this year. Priced at $6.99, it was a fantastic game. At only $0.99 each for the iPhone and iPad versions, this is guaranteed to be an ideal purchase for any strategy shooter fans.

Reviewed favourably earlier this year, Shadow Guardian will look immediately familiar to Uncharted fans.

Another homage to a great, there’s Rogue Planet which looks a heck of a lot like Advance Wars. This is a very good thing.

There are also discounts for the Gameloft Action Pack and Sports Pack, each providing three games in all for only $0.99!

The Gameloft Action Pack comes with Hero of Sparta, Blades of Fury and Brothers in Arms, while the Sports Pack comes with Let’s Golf, Real Tennis and Pro Baseball.

Also dropped in price is James Cameron’s Avatar but we reckon it’s more for avid fans of the film rather than being a must have title in its own right.

Finally, there’s a price drop for Zombie Infection which we rather enjoyed last year as well as a price drop for Prince of Persia: Warrior Within.

All these games are on sale for a limited time only so get buying now rather than later!
