Anuman Interactive Announces Its Gamescom Line-Up

It’s not long until Gamescom kicks off, the world’s largest games trade fair, held yearly in Cologne, Germany. While some fantastic surprises are no doubt still ahead of us, French publisher Anuman Interactive are all too keen to let us know of their line up at the event.

It’s a pretty exciting bunch too. Racing fans can enjoy the likes of Moto Racer – 15th Anniversary while sports fans have the promise of rugby game The Rugger Boys, adapted from the comic book of the same name. Retro gaming fans are perhaps luckiest with the future promising Barbarian (presumably the Commodore 64 classic slash em up), Crazy Cars, Prehistorik Man and Titan.

More casual affair also emerges with hidden object games inspired by comic books XIII and IR$, set to be released later this year and the time management game, Monument Builder – Eiffel Tower, set to take place in the heart of Paris during the construction of the famous tower.

As always, we’ll be sure to keep updated on the progress of all these titles as more details emerge.

SwipeTapTap is Free for a Limited Time

MochiBitsSwipeTapTap is a surprisingly engrossing game despite its utter simplicity. Following on-screen prompts involving (what else?) swipes, taps and various combinations as quickly and accurately as possible is one of those things I’d never have expected to keep me entertained for very long, but it does just that. Not only that, it keeps things from getting stale by including a total of four game modes. And it’s free at the moment, did I forget to mention that? Nah, I’m pretty sure I did.

Each of the four modes uses the same basic mechanics in different ways. Classic is all about inputting the correct gestures as they scroll across the screen in a timely manner. Take too long or screw up too often and they’ll fill the screen and it’s Game Over. Memory is more like a classic game of Simon, only with a touch screen interface. Speed is a race against time, requiring almost super-human-like reflexes at the higher difficulties. Finally, Endurance is one big continuous level with no end in sight and steadily increasing speed. Losing isn’t so much a question of “if” but of “when.”

And yes, for a limited time (in conjunction with “OpenFeint’s Free Game of the Day”) this finger-flexing homage to Simon is completely and totally free. All of the games modes. No money down. Zero dollars. There’s absolutely no legitimate reason not to check it out.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth HD Review

Anomaly: Warzone Earth HD Review

By
Carter Dotson on August 11th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: TOWER OFFENSE
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Anomaly: Warzone Earth HD is a tower offense game, putting players in control of invading forces that must survive the defenses the enemy has laid out.

Developer: 11 Bit Studios
Price: $3.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0.1
Device Reviewed On: iPad 1

Tower defense games are a dime a dozen on the App Store. Seriously, I think I have a dozen of them on my iPod touch. However, what about those invading forces trying to navigate through the maze of towers? Surely an interesting game could be built involving tower offense, no? Anomaly: Warzone Earth attempts this, putting players in control of units who must try to survive a maze of denses laid out by the enemy. This is tower offense.

Each level starts with an overview of the map and where the enemy’s defenses are. The player then buys their selection of units from their budget, with a total potential rollout of 6 units, from APCs that can take a beating to Crawlers that deal heavy damage, shield generators that protect nearby units, and more. They then choose their path through the level, deciding where the units will turn at various junctions, though the paths can be changed mid-game. There are items that give extra money strewn throughout the levels, typically surrounded by powerful towers, so the goal becomes whether to risk racing after extra money, or if a more efficient route is better. Units can be upgraded with money spent mid-level.

The game presents a great blend of both careful strategization and fast reactions; learning how to use the abilities to heal units and draw fire away from them at the right times is key to success, between having units live or die, or even success and failure. The game is a great fit for the iPad (though the game is also available on iPhone and iPod touch), providing a detailed view of the action, with plenty of room for the interface to work. Planning out routes is fantastic with all the room available to see the map. The game doesn’t just have its 15 levels of campaign mode, but also a Squad Assault mode that features different spawning objectives, and a Commander Trials mode available after beating the game; it can also be unlocked by sending it as a gift to two friends, but this feature did not work at time of review.

The path deployment system can be very complicated to figure out because of all the twists and turns involved in the levels. When adjusting paths, it can be very easy to get caught going around in circles, or be stuck taking a longer route because the convoy was just past where they could turn. One of the most challenging things about the game is deploying abilities in a pinch, like deploying a repair ability when a unit is about to die. The game is very busy visually, so keeping an eye on everything that’s going on is very important, because things can get out of hand and units wiped off the face of the earth very quickly.

11 Bit Studios’ take on tower offense is a very good-looking game, and one that is well-designed. The levels can be daunting at times, but it really just takes some strategic planning in order to solve the game’s challenges. For those who have played one too many tower defense games and want a new perspective on things, this is worth checking out.

Be Ready for Anything (ANYTHING) With The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

This fall, Douglas Adams nerds will have the granddaddy of all iOS apps to show off to their friends. Whether they actually care or not. Hothead Games, in a somewhat obvious attempt to prove that the entire planet owes them a drink, is making a “real” Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy for the iPhone and iPad. I’m not talking about an e-book or movie companion or any of that mundane stuff, but a fully realized and interactive rendition of the iconic inter-stellar travel guide.

It’s hard to come up with words to say about this news when my brain keeps going “WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!”

Pushing on, there’s no definitive release date yet aside from “fall,” but it should be out this year which is enough to make any Guide fan happy I’d think. Judging by the screen shots, it looks like a kind of mash-up of of the original concept from Adams’ books and the slightly “modernized” one found in the 2005 film. As for the actual content, Hothead Producer Joel DeYoung had this to say:

We really focused on taking existing Guide entries and presenting them in a new, interactive way… We have so much respect for the original that we had to stay true to the style of Douglas Adams, and deliver an app that feels familiar to fans, but updated for today's devices.

Sure it won’t amount to much more than a fancy iOS toy, but oh what a toy! My inner (and outer) nerd can’t wait to start flipping through entries, reading up on Babel Fish, towels and everything else I’m probably only interested in right now due to nostalgia. “Fall” can’t get here soon enough, as far as I’m concerned.

Scene Partner Review

Scene Partner Review

Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Anyone who owns a car with a GPS is familiar with the phrase, "Make a legal U-Turn." It really doesn't matter if Ryan or Heather says it. The stilted, automated voices of both are difficult to discern at times. Traveling to Orlando, my husband and I are instructed by Heather to stay right for Exit A. Simple enough, right? But Heather keeps saying "Exit Ah." A becomes Ah, and we become confused until we remember that Heather is not actually a human being.

Herein lies my issue with Scene Partner, developed by mytheaterapps.com, LLC. As a theater major in undergraduate school, I see Scene Partner as a welcome use of technology to help actors of all tiers and types to get "offbook." The app's graphics are strong, memorable, and appealing. With enthusiasm, I dive right in to explore.

Scene Partner provides the actor with two free Shakespearean works to try out, As You Like It and King Lear. A long-time fan of King Lear, I choose to "play" Cordelia and match her to the obvious voice option: Heather. For Laura, Susan, or Nancy, I'll have to pay an additional $1.99 a piece. Scene Partner provides a screen for each scene, so that the actor can follow along. Still, Heather's monotonous pitch is practically not useful or useable in interpreting Shakespeare.

Scene Partner provides a "record" option for actors and their scene partners to fill the lines with more inflection and meaning. It also allows actors to download scripts of their choice for a fee. There is an "edit" feature, and one of the most helpful features of Scene Partner is that it allows actors to hear only their cues, to hear their partner's cues, and/or to hear the cues of every cast member. "Actor" and "Theatre" accounts are also available options.

Scene Partner is unimpressive to me at first attempt, but, although I majored in theater in college and continue to appreciate, attend, and offer support to the theater and the fine arts, I no longer need this type of app for practical, everyday use. For those with careers as actors, or for students who intend to pursue a career in the theater, Scene Partner is very possibly an essential, tangible tool for memorizing lines, cues, and mastering other tasks theater actors require. Overall, to access the full range of services Scene Partner offers, a true, working actor, director, or other supporting partner will get the most for their money from this app.

Gravity Chain: Taste the Chain! Also, Gravity.

Gravity Chain is indeed a game with an accurate title – there is gravity, and there is a chain. The player’s goal is to get a star (not mentioned in the title) from its starting point to the goal point, by way of a chain. The player doesn’t have much direct control over anything – the chain has its own physics, there are spikes lining the walls of some levels, and enemies that want to taste some of that sweet, sweet, chain. What does the player control? Well, they control the length of the chain, and oh, just gravity itself. By rotating the device around, gravity will turn with the device, though much like the enemy’s gate, it’s always down. There are 40 levels that the player must navigate the chain and star through, with better rankings available for faster completion. There are also bombs and additional latch points for the chain that can be detached and launched across the levels. Gravity Chain features 40 levels, and is available now for $0.99.

Farm Mania HD Review

Farm Mania HD Review

By
Jennifer Allen on August 11th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: SOLID FUN
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Farm Mania HD is just what the name suggests – time management fun on the farm.

Developer: Realore
Price: $2.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPad 2

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.81 out of 5 stars

As someone with a huge soft spot for story-led time management games, the release of Farm Mania HD rather excited me. While it didn’t hook me quite as much as my previous love, Supermarket Mania HD, I was still pleasantly surprised by what I saw.

The storyline focuses on the tale of Anna who sets out to rebuild her Grandfather’s old farm. Inevitably the story isn’t a huge deal, much like with many other time management games, but at least it offers something that can be related to. 60 levels are on offer here, each gradually introducing a new concept to the arsenal.

Typical time management tropes exist here with players having to juggle numerous different tasks at once ranging from feeding livestock to growing vegetables. Later levels even introduce the need to cook food and make clothing. It’s a varied bunch and serves the game well, keeping things consistently interesting for the player. Particularly fun is breeding animals such as sheep or chickens in order to complete an objective. Each level comes with a series of objectives to achieve such as to grow a set number of vegetables within the time limit.

Interspersed throughout these main levels are a selection of hidden object games offering games such as finding all the hidden sheep amongst a perilous bunch of wolves. Further variation is offered through the ability to purchase upgrades at regular intervals thus making progression that bit simpler.

For the more casual gamer, there’s also the option of playing Farm Mania HD in Casual mode thus bypassing the increasingly challenging timer that lingers around the Arcade mode.

For the casual time management fan, this is an ideal purchase. It’s quite inexpensive for what it offers and as compelling as many others. Being able to breed animals is a particular delight and the whole thing feels relaxed yet gripping. It’s a fine conversion of a popular PC hit.
