Remember Sprinkle? That super-awesome water physics puzzle game about aliens defending their homes from meteoric garbage? Well it’s just been topped-off with more content.

Mediocre Games has just released an update with 14 new levels. That’s probably about 3 lifetimes worth of gameplay, assuming one plans to aim for the maximum rating in each one. Seriously, getting the highest rating for the later stages in this game is hard.

But the real reason I wanted to talk about this has to do with Sprinkle‘s “controversial” in-app purchase option to unlock later worlds. Essentially it wasn’t necessary, as metalcasket mentioned in our review‘s comments. The feature has since been removed, but Mediocre has been gracious enough to offer up 6 new levels (in addition to the previously mentioned 14) to these early in-app purchasers. How cool is that?

Sprinkle is still just $0.99, and now features 36 levels (42 for the in-app folks). And there’s no time like the present to strap on that adorable little extra terrestrial firefighter’s helmet.

Unstoppable Robots: Fortunately, They Can Be Stopped

Unstoppable Robots. Do I need to say any more than that? Robots fighting. Has to be worth a look, surely? Still here? OK, I’ll explain why Unstoppable Robots is worthy of everyone’s time.

As the screenshots ably demonstrate, the robots in the title look a little colorful and crazy. The reason behind this is because they’ve been compromised by a virus called ‘Dummy Algorythm.’ Players must stop these corrupted and defective robots as soon as possible. Fortunately there are plenty of ways to do this across the 25 different locations and numerous boss fights.

16 different weapons keep the action fresh as players battle against the 30 different types of enemies. To an extent, it’s like a Tower Defense title except instead of sitting back and watching the robots be destroyed, players can take an active role by inflicting the damage themselves.

Unstoppable Robots is a free app for iPad users with some in-app purchases to add to the game or remove the adverts if the player so wishes. At that non-existent price, it has to be worth a play!

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: TUNE TOWN
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

This offbeat music software allows one to compose music by creating a virtual city.

Overall Rating: 4.13 out of 5 stars

The beauty of Isle of Tune HD is that it can be whatever the player wants it to be. If the player wants to just mess around and have the game generate nice sounding melodies, that's totally possible. If they don't even want to bother creating songs and simply want to see what other players are up to that's okay too. But if they really want to dig and explore every last inch of this deep, music composing software, then Isle of Tune HD won't disappoint.

On the surface, Isle of Tune HD looks like a stripped down Sim City. Players place roads, cars, buildings and the various other stuff one would find in a town-building game. However, once players press that "go" button at the bottom of the screen, the game reveals itself to be a music composition game almost in the vein of Electroplankton or even the sequencer in Mario Paint. Up to eight cars can go through the track at once and when they pass by certain objects, certain tones play. From that basic concept comes the ability to create incredibly complex, layered songs.

In the basic mode, each item only has a preset amount of tones. This is fine for those who just want to plan a city and really just want the game to make music for them. However, the keyboard mode allows serious musicians to customize every note, change car speeds and directions, and delay certain track elements in order to perfect their masterpiece. Anyone looking to see what is possible with this tool need only see what users are sharing online. Some of it is quite impressive.

What are not so impressive are the controls. This was originally a PC game and while there are some added features, it's clear that a mouse is the superior input method. Making crucial, precise adjustments can be bothersome and worse yet, sometimes the controls are just non-responsive.

Also, while the core conceit of turning a city into an abstract visualization of a piece of music works brilliantly sometimes, like creating separate islands for bass lines and other separate tracks, sometimes that abstractness gets in the way even for those of us with actual musical knowledge.

Still, Isle of Tune HD's hook is ingenious and its creative potential is immense. Even if the iPad isn't necessarily the best way to play it, if that's all someone has this is definitely worth checking out. It's basically GarageBand by way of Will Wright.

Celebrate Women In Technology Through Lovelace & Babbage

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. As a female technology buff I feel especially bad that I didn’t realise it was Ada Lovelace Day on 7th October, a day that aims to raise the profile of women in science, technology, engineering and maths. Ada Lovelace is widely regarded as the first computer programmer. Way back in 1842 she translated Italian Mathematician Luigi Menabrea’s description of Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine. Her fascination in Babbage’s work led to her developing an early form of computer programming thanks to her powerful mathematical mind. She tragically died at the young age of 36 due to cancer.

The reason for this history lesson other than to educate? There’s a light hearted app out called Lovelace & Babbage that aims to provide part entertaining comic book, part informative and educational tellings of their lives and experiences. After all, the best way to learn is to not realise it’s happening!

The comic book is consistently funny and intelligent in its portrayal and certainly makes for a great change from more conventional graphic novels. It’s a free app so an ideal excuse to give it a read. Users then have the option of paying $2.99 for further storytelling in the form of The Client. For those who enjoy it, there’s a new adventure coming out in early 2012 entitled User Experience.

Cosmonauts Review

By

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: WORDS
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Cosmonauts takes the traditional turn-based trajectory-plotting formula and arcades it up a bit.

Developer: Superplay Games

When I think of dog-fighting, it conjures up images of life-or-death struggles while weaving through asteroid fields or epic multi-ship skirmishes. I start thinking of any number of sci-fi movies and TV shows (not just The Trilogy) with anything even remotely resembling a spaceship. Most of all, I think of white-knuckle action. I don’t usually think of what is essentially turn-based interstellar catapult firing.

Yet, that’s kind of what Cosmonauts boils down to. Each side takes turns selecting a weapon, aiming it so as to hopefully connect with their intended target, then firing and seeing what happens. Okay, there’s more to it than that. Each of the weapons has a different special ability such as splitting into three separate projectiles or boosting speed in mid-flight for more damage. There’s also usually a whole mess of space detritus littered throughout the level, including asteroids, health packs, damage boosters, moons and more. Each one can have a profound effect on a shot and can be integral to success. Especially those moons.

What keeps Cosmonauts from being a simple fire-and-forget affair is the way players can affect their shot while it’s still looping through space. Tapping the screen while the projectile is still in flight will activate its special ability, but the most effective way to put the hurt on an opponent is to keep it moving. The longer the hang-time (which is technically impossible in space since there’s no actual gravity) the higher the damage multiplier will climb. This is where the moons come in. Shots will actually orbit them for a time, allowing the multiplyer to climb even higher. Skilled players can even pass one shot from moon to moon repeatedly, creating the kind of ordinance that really shouldn’t be unleashed anywhere near a planet’s atmosphere.

The only real problem with Cosmonauts is that it’s incredibly limited. The free version only grants access to one episode (18 levels), while Episode 2 has to be unlocked through in-app purchase. The same issue crops up with the multiplayer and skirmish modes, where only two ships and two pilots can be used. I get that this is a free game, but it feels more like a demo. And having so many in-app purchases for things like new ships, new pilots and new ship skins seems a little… well it’s not so great. Throwing in an unlockable or two for us cheapskates or even adding a catch-all price to unlock everything at once would be nice.

In the end, though, Cosmonauts is indeed a freemium game and I can’t really fault it for that. There’s just enough content to get a taste, and the multiplayer goes a long way to extending its shelf life. Assuming having a choice between one of two ships and pilots isn’t a problem. Just keep in mind that seeing everything is going to require a payment or two.

Coming to the iPad later this year is the adorable looking Happily Ever After that sets to offer a bit of bite to the fairytelling experience alongside the cutesiness.

Happily Ever After is a puzzle adventure game with a sharp sense of humor as players explore the Kingdom of Unbelievaville. Offering a Shrek style take on fairytales, players will encounter creatures like BB Wolff the local, smarmy, estate agent, Goldilocks and a particularly lazy and oafish prince who’s far from charming despite his name. The game will conclude with the annual Unbelievaville Know Talent contest, presumably throwing in a hefty dose of spoof and parody.

Over 100 different puzzles should keep players happy across the 24 levels with a pleasant mix of logic puzzles, hidden object challenges and even a few riddles for good measures.

Sounds rather good fun to me! Happily Ever After is set for release later this month priced at $4.99.

Check out the PC screenshots below for a hint of what to expect.

Big Buck Safari Review

This game gets players right into the action of hunting big game.

Let’s face it, there aren’t many who make it all the way to Africa to hunt big game. It’s expensive, highly regulated, and probably very difficult to track down large animals and actually take one down. Luckily for those of us that aren’t actual big game hunters, there are hunting games that can provide a small portion of the hunting experience in the palm of your hand.

Big Buck Safari is one of those titles and while it should in no way be counted as a hunting simulator, this game does give players a chance to hunt big game like wildebeests, giraffes, elephants, cheetahs, rhinos and lions. The experience is decidedly arcade-like and players may find it a bit over simplified, but it does a fair job at capturing the excitement of firing a large gun at animals as they bound past through brush and trees. Even players who may not actually find much pleasure in the idea of hunting and animal can have fun playing this game and trying to make accurate shots to bring down their prey.

In each level, or trek, the player is required to hunt for a specific animal trying to bring down the males instead of the females. Shooting and killing a female will end the round. In each level there are also various smaller animals that can be shot for extra points and a trophy animal that can be shot for a larger bonus. There are a certain number of animals that the player can shoot in each round of a trek and after the player has had a chance to shoot each, the round ends and the kills are tallied for a score. Shots must be accurate, to the head or the heart, to bring down an animal and it’s not always easy because the animals are almost always in motion; some faster than others.

At the end of each trek there is also various mini-games which can be played for bonus points. These mini-games can also be accessed separately and played by themselves. Treks of varying lengths can be played depending on how long a game the player wishes to play. Players can also choose a quick play options which gets them right into the hunt.

The environments are small, just one stationary slice of jungle or brush through which animals run. And players shoot at animals by simply tapping on them. The levels really aren’t very different from one another other than the types of animals found in each one. Big Buck Safari is fun, but it isn’t a very deep game. Animals run, players shoot at them by tapping, that about sums it up. Fans of other hunting titles looking for more environments to hunt in may want to give it a look.
