Allied Star Police

If you are not familiar with the Allied Star Police then you are not familiar with the story of Owain Weinert.  This brave child was paired up with PopCap through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the company helped turn his game concept into a full iOS title.  Looking at the production values alone it would be impossible to determine that this was the brainchild of a 9 year old.  It looks and plays amazingly well, proving that you don’t have to be a industry veteran to have a great concept for a game.

Deadlock: Online

Let’s face it, dual stick shooters are nothing truly revolutionary to the iOS.  On the other hand, not that many of these games feature anything that would bear any resemblance to online multiplayer.  This is exactly what Deadlock: Online provides, all for the tremendously steep price-tag of absolutely nothing.  As players become more successful they will get the chance to change and upgrade their gear, furthering the incentive to return, match after match.  Give it a look if you can avoid getting addicted.

Eternity Warriors

The age of the hack and slash game has long since came and went, but that doesn’t mean that there are at least a few of us that long for the good old fashion action that only repetitive mouse clicks could provide.  Tapping into the same vein as repetitive combat games like Gun Bros, this time you are armed with a broadsword that emphasizes close quarters combat.  As you might expect, the title also features a wide variety of character customization, so that players can indulge their inner control freak.

SuperRope

The urge to climb forever higher would seem to be an interesting construct in gaming.  The problem is that it could prove to be rather limiting for variety.  At least this is what I felt until I check out SuperRope and had my impressions turned on their ear.  Though the concept is simple, the execution is far more difficult that one might think.  Give it a look, it will keep you climbing for hours.

ZombieSmash

Originally a full priced iOS release, ZombieSmash has been recently reduced in price to absolutely nothing.  Melding together the genres of castle defense and the undead seem like a fairly unlikely combination, but it actually seems to work rather well.  If our review is any indication, you will have four stars worth of mindless entertainment.

Wisp: Eira’s Tale Review

By
Sinan Kubba on July 22nd, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: FAIRY MAGIC
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

A beautiful platformer with delicate touch controls, Wisp is a magical puzzle waiting to be solved

Developer: Triolith
Price: Free
Version: 1.3
App Reviewed on: iPhone 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Wisp: Eira’s Tale is the second game from Triolith Entertainment. Their first effort was the self-descriptively action-packed Thunder Bang, a gaudy homage to the 90s TV show Power Rangers. Wisp: Eira’s Tale could not be more different.

Playing as a wee wispy fairy called Eira, the aim is to collect three crystals scattered across each of the game’s 30 levels and take them to the goal. Eira is controlled by pushing on the touch screen to make her float up and tilting the iPhone left and right to move her across. The slight sluggishness to both the touch and tilt controls gives Eira a very natural and delicate movement. She moves slowly, but not frustratingly because the levels aren’t huge and also because there’s plenty of skill involved in making sure she avoids the trials and tribulations of the map. There are black balls of goo called corruptions and they are found in most of the levels, sometimes moving in set patterns and at other times chasing after Eira, often rather menacingly given her slow pace.

There’s a real art to timing Eira’s floats, drops, and sideways movements to avoid her enemies, especially when she has a power-up. The rock power-up, for example, makes Eira able to blast downward through rocky obstacles, but it also somehow notches her down yet another gear of speed, making it imperative for players to master how to time their dodges. The ice power-up lets Eira freeze what would be death-doling obstacles, but if she hits a wall then she’ll immediately shatter. The power-ups, and how levels are built around them such as the two that spent completely in the speed-draining rock mode, make each puzzle feel individual and new. It’s a common pitfall of iPhone games; nice base idea, but no substance to carry it through. Wisp only starts to lose its hold right towards the end, but it doesn’t feel like it’s outlived its welcome by any stretch; the calming plucks of the music and the soothing greens of the environment keep things cool and comfortable.

The only criticism is that the last few levels could do a little more oomph, a little more of the ingenuity that was shown in the middle section of the game. Also, there could be a little more imagination and diversity in the visuals; as lovely as that green forest backdrop is, that’s all there really is. Yes, it’s nitpicking, really it is. That’s not to say Wisp: Eira’s tale is staggeringly good. It’s very good, sure, but it’s more that it doesn’t really put too many feet wrong. I appreciate it for that, and for the beautifully slow change of pace it provided in the conveyor belt of attention-grabbing nonsense that is the iOS marketplace.

Star Wars Blu-ray: Early Access

This app is Star Wars fanware and shameless self-promotion from Fox, but if you’re waiting with baited breathe as many good geeks are, especially us, for a peek at all the special features and bonus goodies that will be packaged with the huge Blu-Ray release slated for release on September 16, here’s a chance for a free sneak peek. The app is iPad only and you won’t see anything they don’t want you too, but it really looks gorgeous – a geek’s GUI for sure – and any sneak peek while the event is still months off is very welcome.

Stickman BMX

There were not all that many new apps released this week, but it was a great week for gamers. Our favorite casual title is Stickman BMX and its HD counterpart. It’s a super simple game- a sequel to the hugely popular Stickman Skater, but in this side scroller players use intuitive and simple controls to take Stickman on on a BMX ride full of jumps and tricks and good old fashioned doodlesque styling mixed with a richer animated look. The graphics are super and fans of the original will be happy to know Stickman can ride a skateboard too with a one-time $.99 IAP.

Dragon Go!

With Go! the award-winning speech recognition technology they has long made Dragon famous provides hands-free voice-commands for everyday use. Users just have to ask for what they want to find, i.e. “Harry Potter near here” and it will search Fandango and serve up local listing and trailers to the final chapter. It works with Pandora and Last FM too – ask for an artist or song and start listening. Wiki, Google, Amazon, YouTube, eBay, Twitter, its a’ll available not at a tap, but with a word. The app is only on the US App Store and some services like Fandango and Pandora are US only, but we tested the command ‘find chinese restaurants with takeout” in Canada along with “get directions to closest mall” and got instant accurate results. We’re amazed at how well the app understood every question and automatically searched in the right place to supply the most accurate and relevant results. Users can share Dragon Go! results by email, text messages, Facebook and Twitter. Perfect hands free information on the go.

Gif Shop

Ever wondered how people make GIFs – those little animated web graphics? Gif Shop unveils the wizard behind the gif-creating curtain and with a tap users can instantly capture sequential snaps with the device’s camera – up to a suggest maximum of 100 – and let the app take care of turning the pictures into an animated loop. Users need a free Gif Shop account to share their results on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, with shortlink included to paste and share with friends via email of MMS. It’s really cool and borderline idiot proof.

Google+

Google+ is Google’s new foray into the social media world. The network which is free, but for now, by invite only, certainly has a lot of buzz and a lot of early sign-ups, but analysts and pundits are dubious as to whether the Big G can compete with- much less unseat – giants Facebook and Twitter and even Tumblr and Flickr all of whose services Google+ has integrated in one way or another, into their new venture. If you have a an account, and find the mobile web app lacking, there is now a free iPhone client on the App Store. Is it good? Well it’s hard to separate opinions about the service from the app itself, but we’ve heard it can handle most of the feature that are central to Google + like Circles and Huddles, and has it’s own notification system built-in, but it’s not as robust as many would like lacking central features like video chat and of course it’s not universal so iPad owners are feeling left out. It is free, and there’s nothing third-party to compete with it, so if the service appeals get the app.

Faces: Fun With Photos Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: FUN
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

Faces: Fun With Photos offers a quirky way of personalizing photos.

iPhone Integration Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.92 out of 5 stars

Faces: Fun with Photos is clearly an app that has been carefully thought through. It’s an app that enables its users to transform their photos with the use of around 200 humorous props to create fun pictures. It’s kind of like those photo booths that always seem to be in shopping centers and malls, encouraging people to mess around with their friends and take some fun shots. An app like Faces: Fun with Photos could have stuck with a very obvious and uninspired user interface but developers tap tap tap clearly decided this wasn’t good enough.

Instead the user interface is great, keeping in key with the rest of the app perfectly. Users are offered the choice of taking a photo from within the app, using either the front or back camera (if available), picking a photo out from the photo album and viewing the props available. Once a photo has had props added to it, it even shows up in the corner of the room on the screen. Throughout the experience, a cheeky and cheery soundtrack plays in the background adding to the lighthearted atmosphere.

The props themselves are pretty cool, offering a vast array of quirkiness. It’s the kind of thing that would particularly appeal to younger iOS users but still be plenty of fun for all ages. Users can choose what props to add or press a randomize button to see what comes up. Everything from funky glasses to afros and weird ears are possible. Once a creation has been finalized users can then share through the usual options of Twitter, Facebook, SMS and Email.

There’s a plentiful supply of props already but I’m hopeful for future updates to add more as Faces: Fun with Photos has the potential to be a popular hit for longer than its first few weeks of sale if this happens. It’s good fun indeed and the ideal app to enjoy with friends and family.

Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Get off the scorching pavement and play hopscotch on your iPad with the cool game from Chillingo

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.06 out of 5 stars

Finger Shoes is like hopscotch for fingers. This simple casual family-friendly action game from Chillingo is oddly satisfying to play and requires a lot more dexterity than it might first appear.

The title has gamers tapping on a series of squares in an effort to land on each of them in a series of 3D courses.

Players guide a boy on his jumping quest, flicking thematically appropriate items like cats from an alley out of his way as he goes.

Successful speedy completion does not yield a perfect three stars as is the custom for these types of games. Rather, players must seek out and tap on three shoes hidden on every course. It's a nice variation on al all too familiar theme.

The game starts off easily, but soon the environments have obstacles that, like real three dimensional structures, obscure the view.

It takes both fast reflexes and good visual recall to complete all but the easiest levels.

This is one of Chilingo’s more inventive games, particularly in a summer full of multiple weekly releases. Yet it seems to have gone virtually unnoticed with not a single review in the US app store.

That's too bad because aside from the easy-to-use controls, and solid gameplay the graphics are both rich and charming. Even the game's soundtrack is one of the very few I didn't turn off right away. It's not exactly melodic, but neither is it annoying and it suits the game perfectly.

Finger Shoes is Game Center and Crystal Network enabled for leader boards and achievements and like in most Chillingo titles successful completion of one level unlocks the next.

The only hiccup I found in testing the game is the controls have a lag. It's not noticeable on the first few levels, but it becomes an obstacle gamers will be frustrated by on the crazier tracks in later worlds. With a slight increase in sensitivity – something easily tweakable – I'd be hooked.

If there is a game equivalent to a beach book, Finger Shoes is it. It's not going to tax the mind, but it does make a terrific light summer diversion for those who love fast-tapping action games.
