Nexon Mobile, developers of Maple Story Cygnus Knights Edition, has announced a new first person shooter for iOS, Combat Arms: Zombies. The game will be based off Combat Arms, a free to play game for PC. Specifically, this game is based off of the Fireteam mode of the original, which puts players against oncoming enemy hordes, trying to survive and advance from checkpoint to checkpoint. As the title insinuates, the iOS version features that latest cultural craze, zombies, as the foe of choice. Nexon Mobile plans to release the game later this November after debuting the game at South Korea’s G-Star gaming expo on November 10th. The game will be available for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, amd while there has been no confirmation, it will likely be a free to play title like the PC version. The game will be running on Unreal Engine 3, and according to Nexon Mobile CEO, Albert Rim, it “will set a new standard for graphics…on mobile devices.” Check out a teaser trailer for the game below.

Mint.com is a service that I wish would come over to the British shores. For now though, I’ll just gaze longingly at how the already excellent personal finance app has now been optimized for the iPad and improved upon.

Built with the iPad and iOS5 in mind (which is now a requirement to install Mint.com Personal Finance), the overview screen has been redesigned so that users can quickly get a snapshot of their finances as well as the latest alerts and bill reminders. Cash and pending transactions can be entered to ensure the most accurate view of the user’s finances, plus detailed transactions are viewable. Multi-touch graphs make everything easy to understand, particularly for those who work best with visual imagery, so its users always know where their money is going.

It’s a sizeable enough update that re-establishes Mint.com Personal Finance‘s position as a great app for all US and Canadian users in their quest to keep an eye on their finances. It’s out now.

VH1 Celebrity Party Review

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: PARTY FODDER
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

VH1 Celebrity Party is an iOS version of a classic party game. It’s simple but ideal for playing with friends.

Developer: MTV Networks
Price: FREE
Version Reviewed: 1.1.1
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Playtime Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars

The success of VH1 Celebrity Party depends solely on one very crucial ingredient: the friends that play the game. Based upon the fun party game Celebrity, VH1 Celebrity Party is all about trying to guess what celebrity the other player is trying to describe. It’s an entertaining combination of Taboo, charades and Password, and is always extra fun with keen friends.

While Celebrity could be played without an app, VH1 Celebrity Party does make things just as fun and considering the app can be acquired for free, that’s no bad thing at all. The free version comes with a selection of different themes: Babies of the 1990s, Celebrities’ Children Who Hit It Big, Celebrity Supernaturals, Comedians and Summer Stars. In each case, teams of two or more compete to identify the celebrities with each of the three rounds offering different rules. The first round means that the clue-giver can say anything but the celebrity’s name while the second means that the player can only use two words and the final stage only allows charades. With the right bunch of people, it’s fun. All the celebrities mentioned are pretty famous but for those not in the know, there’s an option to get some more information on them.

For a fee of $0.99, players can download 10 more themed packs. There’s also the ability to pair multiple iOS devices over Bluetooth, thus enabling each player to have their own controller and saving the need to pass the original device around. It’s not really compulsory though and given the fact that the developers state that free packs update frequently, players could just get by with the free version unless they plan on an extended playing session.

VH1 Celebrity Party is a simple title with no fancy graphics other than images of the relevant celebrities. However, much like the game it’s based on, with the right people, it’s a blast. For the anti social gamer, though, it’s probably best to give it a miss.

Favorite Four: Camera Replacement Apps

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. Apple has done a lot to improve the native camera app with iOS 5 and lucky iPhone 4S owners are already taking the highest quality iPhone images ever. But, even with the tune up, many of the most requested features from manual adjustments to photo bursts, darkroom effects to more sharing options (Facebook anyone?) are still lacking. But, the app store is filled with alternatives so this week we look at our favorite four camera replacement apps.

Camera+

Camera+ has been the top camera replacement app almost since its launch in June 2010 and gets frequent updates keeping it at the top of the charts and this list. The app allows uses to users to set focus and exposure manually like a real camera, uses the iPhone 4 LED flash as a continuous fill light to brighten up dark settings, has image stabilization and a 6x digital zoom that really pulls the action in. Camera+ allows for photo editing, has a lot of effects, and has plenty of social media integration for easy photo sharing.

Camera Genius

For still and video Camera Genius replaces the native camera app with 6x digital zoom, a full screen button to make it easy to snap pics on the fly, a timer, image stabilization and a mini burst mode which will take three action shots rapidly. The app also helps iPhoneographers and videographers shoot clean with a Photo Composition Guide and of course, lots of sharing capabilities.

Camera Plus Pro

Camera Pro Plus is all about speed. The developers claim it is the fastest camera app, and while we can't verify that, it is zippy. This app features live video and still filters so users can preview effects before snapping and add them in one step. Burst mode is particularly useful for action settings allowing for 40 shots to be taken in rapid succession and the app has array of editing and darkroom effects, private photo and video collection storage, even photo transfer via Wi-Fi along with the requites social network sharing options.

King Camera

King Camera is a newcomer to the App Store. It’s a powerful, fast and responsive app with some cool features missing from others on this list including the ability to shoot time lapse photography and stop motion animation. The app controls the video camera too and adds a big button to both along with a rule of 3rds grid and integrates a flashlight feature for low-lighting situations. For stills there is also exposure and white balance lock, a self-timer, anti-shake even photo backup. The app also has some fairly robust photo editing abilities, the requisite fun filters and, you guessed it, lots of easy social media sharing with a tap. The French Canadian company behind the app even had a commercial shot for local TV using only images taken with an iPhone and the King Camera app – judge for yourselves.

Oscura Review

By

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: DELICIOUSLY DARK
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

A dark platforming adventure that most players may find too short.

Developer: MTV Networks

Price: $1.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.38 out of 5 stars

Oscura is a platforming game that takes players through a dark, foreboding environment in search of crystal shards that will bring light back to the lighthouse that keeps the dark creatures away. The game is split up into several levels through which players guide a spindly, shadowy figure through hazardous levels filled with obscure beasts and dangerous obstacles.

The platforming experience in Oscura is a interesting affair thanks to its fairly unique approach to touch controls on iOS devices. Many iOS platformers rely on virtual buttons while others rely on simplified gameplay with simple touch controls. Oscura splits the difference with an addaptive type of touch controls that is reasonably well suited to the gameplay. Touch and hold the right side of the screen and they character will advance in that direction, touch the other side and the character advances in the other direction. Tap with the other finger while the character is moving and it will jump. Tap with both thumbs at once and the character jumps straight up. Getting used to these controls may take some time, but once they are familiar, they provide the touch and control needed to survive the game’s environments.

One unfortunate fact — which will hopefully be remedied with updates in the future — is the game’s relatively short length. Currently there are only a few playable levels available with the rest marked as “Coming Soon”. Whether or not new levels are on the way, the $1.99 price tag seems a bit steep for how long it will take the average player to complete the game as it is.

There is a time slowing mechanic in Oscura that players can use after collecting enough crystal shards. Slowing time will help players advance past particularly difficult sections in each level and it allows players to really appreciate the environments as they traverse them in slow-mo. The current length of the game means that players will need to decide if the price is right for them. Players receive star ratings at the end of each level, and there are also collectable gears in each level that can help extend the gameplay for a little while.
