App Store Bargain Hunting From AppZapp

Back when the App Store was a new and shiny invention, I remember being able to browse the entire contents of the store within the space of an hour at most. These days however, it would take so long to browse the store that more apps would have been added by the time anyone got to the end. While we at 148apps can help iOS owners keep up to date with all the best and most interesting apps out there, even we can miss out on a hidden gem or forgotten bargain. This is precisely where AppZapp enters the picture.

AppZapp promises to be the Bargain Guide for the App Store and a quick glance will confirm that for all. AppZapp keeps track of all the price drops going on at any one time then lists them in appropriately organised lists for easy consultation.

The Live Stream is of particular interest offering a whole bunch of apps that have had their price adjusted. The difference here is that the Stream keeps track of what other users of AppZapp have been downloading at the current time forming an ideal way of seeing exactly what’s popular at any given time. The Top List offers a similar facility along with the option to view the App Store charts easily without having to delve into the App Store app. Sales and Now Free sections supply apps in order of when the price dropped. There’s even an AppZapp news section that informs users of the best apps out there that have recently gone down in price.

AppZapp has the potential to save its users a heck of a lot of money which is pretty impressive stuff for such an inexpensive app. It’s free for iPhone users while a mere $0.99 for a HD iPad version. Users can choose to pay $1.99 to remove ads if they so wish. There’s also the option to pay $0.99 for a Push Service Notification system.

However readers of 148apps don’t have to worry about this as we have an exclusive code to gain that for free! All users have to do is go to Settings and Coupon Code then simply enter 148apps to gain the service for free!

Surely a perfect reason to give AppZapp a try, right?

Scene It? Pixel Flix Movies Finally Combines the Two Best Visual Medias

Film trivia buffs and retro video game lovers rejoice! Screenlife, makers of all things Scene It? on the App Store, have just releasedScene It? Pixel Flix. Okay so it’s not a real combination of the two, but rather a trivia game dressed-up in vaguely 8-bit visuals. Still, it’s a neat idea and certainly grabbed my attention.

Players take on the role of a pock-marked theater usher as they attempt to complete a gauntlet of movie related trivia questions and ultimately square-off against the theater’s “boss.” It follows the same basic structure as most other titles in the genre with multiple categories to choose from (Leading Ladies, Horror, etc…) and several different methods of answering questions on a timer. My personal favorite is the one that recreates famous movie scenes in pixel form and asks players to guess the film. Watching an 8-bit rendition of Sarah Connor blasting away at that liquid metal guy is hilarious.

Pixel Flix is free (ad supported) and sitting in the App Store right now.The base experience is bound to keep small-time trivia hounds busy, but the elite can also buy add-ons such as new genre questions and power-ups through in-app purchases. Just remember to clear some space before downloading as it’s a somewhat hefty 160 MB.

Lola’s Fruit Shop Sudoku GiggleApps Review

Lola's Fruit Shop Sudoku is a very nice application simplifying the classic game Sudoku and adding a nice fruit theme which creates a version that kids and adults will enjoy. Both iPhone and iPad versions of this application are available, and there is an impressive choice of languages to choose from, specially English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Finnish, Japanese, Korean and simplified Chinese.

I really enjoy this app and the changes made from the traditional game of Sudoku to make it easier and more enjoyable for kids as early as four years, as well as beyond in the more difficult sections. This application is part of the "Lola" series of apps starring lovable panda Lola, who keeps a watchful eye on the users, adding bits of narration about her love of fruit as well as encouraging the players throughout these games.

iBlast Moki 2 HD Review

iBlast Moki 2 HD Review

By
Carter Dotson on August 18th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: IT'S A BLAST!
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

iBlast Moki 2 is a timing-based physics puzzler where players use bombs and other items to get all the Mokis into the portal in each level.

Developer: Godzilab
Price: $2.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPad 1, iPod touch 4

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.38 out of 5 stars

iBlast Moki 2 is the physics puzzler grown up. Unlike other physics puzzlers that just require objects and/or trucks to be launched at structures, iBlast Moki 2 requires a bit more thought. The goal of each level is to get all the Mokis, who sometimes wear silly little hats for maximum adorableness, into the big portal at the end of each level. How is this accomplished? By using bombs, of course! But not just plain old bombs, of course; there are also bombs for speeding up the Mokis on the ground, making the ground bouncy, and even glue for sticking objects together. There’s also objects like balloons, ropes, and steel girders for connecting objects together and building structures for the Mokis and other obstacles in the levels to navigate through. Timing also becomes a key, as some levels are set up to have objects in the environment fall at certain times, or to require a certain bomb to be used at a certain time; thankfully, each bomb has a delay timer that can be set up to go off after a certain time.

What makes iBlast Moki 2 more substantial than other physics puzzlers is just the amount of strategy and planning that goes into solving the levels. Levels can’t just be solved through random happenstance; this requires experimentation and testing. Each level is like building a machine and trying to find a way to make it work properly, and then the scores at the end of each level are grades on how effective the machine is. This isn’t just about flinging objects and hoping they’ll work; this requires actual thought to succeed. The list of top scores on each level can really help players to try and find better solutions, especially as little adjustments can mean a lot of points. The game’s level editor deserves particular mention; it allows players to make their own levels and share them with other players in the game, and is extremely powerful. How powerful is it? Well, the developers claim that they made all the levels in the game in that level editor itself. The editor can be complex, but it allows for pretty much any type of level that the engine can handle to be possible. The HD version of the game continues a trend that I and other multiple device owners can appreciate, as it is universal.

The more complex design of iBlast Moki 2 means that many of the solutions to the game can be very difficult to even start to try and figure out, and while solutions are available to view, they are limited by the number of coins that the player has, and it appears as if the only way to get them is to complete worlds. iBlast Moki 2 really needs a fast forward feature, as testing out slightly improved solutions can become quite time-consuming in the later, more complex levels. The HD version of the game really could use cross-platform waves; this is a feature not seen in a lot of games, but it does exist, and would be fantastic for this game! There is a way to synchronize solutions between platforms, but no actual progress synchronization.

iBlast Moki 2 is a game that at first I loved, then I hated because it was making me angry. The first world of 20 levels or so is simple enough, but once the second world rolls around, the game becomes a lot more challenging. Frustration will abound, but it just makes success so much sweeter. Few games make me feel like the genius that I am quite like this one when I succeed. Fans of the original will want to check this one out, particularly as the new items and the level editor are fantastic additions to the game.

TextGrabber Review

TextGrabber Review

By
Jason Wadsworth on August 18th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: HANDY
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

This app will help users input text from anywhere on their devices, as long as 100% accuracy isn’t required.

Developer: ABBYY

Price: $1.99
Version Reviewed: 1.5
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

iPhone Integration Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.33 out of 5 stars

TextGrabber is a handy little app that can help users get text from a business card or flyer or poster onto their iOS device without having to type it all in by hand. It does this through OCR (optical character recognition) software that is built into the app. By taking a photo of the text they want to capture, users can have TextGrabber analyze the photo and pull out any text it finds, converting it to digital text. Once the text from the photo is captured and converted to digital text, the user can do anything with it that they could do with any normal digital text. Email, text, copy and paste, or even just save for later.

Users have the option of snapping a photo of their text in the app or loading a photo of text from their photo library. Once the photo is loaded in the app, the user can crop the photo down to just the desired text. This helps the app hone in on the text the user is interested in capturing and it cuts down on the time it takes the app to analyze the photo and capture the text. Once the crop is made the app goes to work and pulls out all the text it can find in the image. “Find” is the operative word here because if the text is obscured at all or harder to distinguish from say a background image, the app will not be able to find and capture it. The text needs to be fairly clear for the app to work at all.

Even when the text is clear though, TextGrabber has a hard time getting the text just right. Often it will misread punctuation and spacing and will output a jumble of random characters in the middle of the text. More often than not, the text that it captures is close to the original with some slight differences in spacing and punctuation. For grabbing a few words or numbers here and there, TextGrabber works just fine but it lacks the accuracy needed to be a truly useful app.

Localmind Gets a 1.5 Update, Includes Pictures

I must admit, the existence of Localmind is something I wasn’t even aware of until recently. Now I’m wondering why that is, since it’s a rather ingenious app. Utilizing an iOS device’s GPS in order to let users ask and answer questions about various destinations in their area seems like the kind of thing that’s both ahead of its time and has been a long time coming. It’s odd that it’s taken so long, I know.

So recently Localmind (the developer) released a new update for Localmind (the app) which includes a slew of new things. A number of them are being touted as mostly unnoticeable but still important (i.e. small tweaks and such). However, there are also a trio of specific additions that users have been clamoring for.

First, users can now use photos to answer questions which can provide some (I would imagine) very handy visual aids, such as an honest look at how long a line might be. Second, it’s now possible to answer past questions and those that have already been answered, adding a second (or third, or fourth, etc.) impression. Third, and perhaps most puzzling for a “Top 3 Requested Features” feature, is the ability to turn off the anonymous feature and use a real name and/or portrait. I’m not entirely sure about how essential that last one is, but I can certainly see how the other two options can be handy.

Localmind is the kind of app that can certainly be useful to just about anyone on certain occasions, such as when going to the movies or heading off to the airport. Folks such as myself in major metropolitan areas will no doubt get even more use out of it. Regardless, anyone who leaves the house every now and then would do well to check this out. Especially given the increased usefulness with this update.

TableDrum Review

TableDrum Review

By
Jason Wadsworth on August 18th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: FINGER TAPPING FANTASTIC
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

This amazing app turns simple table tapping into realistic drum beats and rhythms.

Developer: Dohi Sweden

Price: $3.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 3GS

iPhone Integration Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Learning to pound out rhythms on a full, professional drum kit would be a daunting task for most people and it can take years of hard practice to master. Table drumming, however — much like its close musical cousin, the air guitar — is a much more accessible option for the every day music lover. Everyone has probably caught themselves idly drumming away on their desk or table top with their fingers or a pen from time to time. TableDrum takes that tapping and transforms it into something that wouldn’t be out of place on the next chart topping single on the radio.

The beauty of this app is that it makes something as simple as tapping your fingers on a table and makes it sounds very close to beating out rhythms on an actual set of real percussion instruments. There are lots of apps out there that lay will out a virtual drum set or an array of buttons on a device’s screen and allow users to awkwardly plunk out rhythms. TableDrum, on the other hand, extends past the limitations of the user’s screen and makes virtually any surface into an instrument that the user can use to make their music.

To do this, users select up to four drums or cymbals (other percussion instruments are available via in-app purchase) to use at one time. This is one of the app’s biggest drawbacks because only being able to select four separate instruments at once really limits the combination of kits users can come up with. Once four instruments are selected, each instrument can be mapped to a different distinct tapping sound that the user makes by tapping a finger or pen or ring (or pretty much anything) on whatever happens to be nearby. The app then registers these sounds and instantly translates them into a cymbal crash or a snare hit.

Translating finger taps into percussive sounds might sound amazing enough to merit some praise, but this app goes one step farther. Not only does the app register the separate and distinct tapping sounds and translate them into the sounds of a real drum kit, it also registers the intensity of the sound and makes the corresponding drum sound equally loud or soft. This is all done dynamically and with little to no noticeable latency. Users will need to make sure and choose several very different sounding taps though because if the tapping sounds mapped to each instrument are too similar it can result in some inadvertent errors.

For the amateur musician or the table tapping enthusiast, this app is simply too fun and too ingenious to ignore. The interface is great and it sounds amazing when let loose.
