Speed is everything in this rapidly moving world. Social networking demonstrates that ably. Providing brief but concise information is just as important but it’s not always easy to sum something up while keeping all the pertinent information in there. Enter Trimit which hopes to rectify that problem.

It’s the first of its kind – an app that automatically summarizes and condenses information. It does so by using an incredibly complicated and impressive algorithm to ‘trim’ text to any specified length. All the relevant information is in there, it’s just taken out all the fluff.

The app allows for users to set filters, add acronyms, abbreviations or shorten URLs. Even the ability to remove vowels is in there if the user so wishes, although the one-time English student in me isn’t so sure about that!

Text can be simply imported from any URL and the results then shared via email, SMS, Facebook, Twitter, printed or saved as a txt file for future reference.

It’s impressive stuff indeed.

Check out the video that demonstrates Trimit in action.

It’s available now priced at $0.99 for a limited time only, with a regular price of $4.99 in the future.

Puzzle Agent 2 HD Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: INSANELY PUZZLING
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Solve logic, sequencing and math problems while you return to the creepy town of Scogginss MN, with Agent Tethers in this stylish puzzle-adventure sequel.

Welcome back to Scoggins Minnesota. Agent Tethers has returned to iOS in Puzzle Agent 2,and it's the most inventive adventure-puzzler to port to the App Store since the first instalment brought Graham Annabel’s character to life in a game that will make fans of Professor Layton not only cheer, but laugh.

This cleverly conceived mash up of story and solving takes gamers on a journey to the backwoods of Minnesota where strange things have been afoot, ever since Agent Tethers solved the eraser factory mystery the last time he was there.

Residents of the town have gone missing (including the factory foreman) spacemen appear out of nowhere (or not) and even Scoggins’ gnome-worshiping cult is at loose ends.

To unravel the plot and save the town, players help Tethers solve a series of puzzles – largely logic, sequencing and math problems – that vary in difficulty from easy to “WTH super difficult.”

Agent Tethers thinks best while chewing gum, so finding wads throughout the game can help. They are generously apportioned – use them to unlock up to three hints per puzzle, only the last of which really offers a good solve for the stumped.

You don't need to have played the original Puzzle Agent to enjoy the sequel, but it helps. The story picks up right where the other left off.

Here’s the cinematic trailer:

I tested this game on an iPad 2, and the performance is smooth, although the animation style is intentionally choppy. There are reports of frame-rate issues on original iPads and older iPhone and iPod touch models, though I didn’t see any.

The puzzles are the point, though, and they are plentiful and – for the most part – challenging. The standouts are the art and story, here. Annabele's quirky characters are animated with engaging voice acting and some serious strangeness more befitting a Chris Moore novel or an “X-Files” episode than an adventure game. But, as a game, it works.

Most of the puzzles are solvable without too much mental mastication, but a few left at least this one avid puzzler Googling for cheats.

Sometimes the instructions are a little less-than-clear. All it takes is an "A-ha! That's what they mean" moment and it's all good, but gamers better hope they have one, because there is no way to really skip puzzles if the story is to progress.

There is a replay issue inherent to most adventure games. These puzzles have right and wrong answers, and the story is inventive to say the least, but not interactive per se, so once you've finished the game all that's left are a pair of bonus puzzles and some very lengthy credits.

That said, this game is a gem, and a nice change of pace for those who don't think of catapulting birds or slashing ropes as true puzzles. Ardent solvers may play through the game in a night, but it will be a fun night. Dont’t forget to watch for Puzzle Agent 3 to find out if Agent Tethers ever gets to try the famous "hot dish."

Weave Adds New Functionality For To Do Lists

Weave is a To Do list app. We’ve all seen those before but Weave offers some fundamental differences. Instead of solely tracking what needs doing, it also keeps notes on income, expenses, projects and time spent making it an ideal way of keeping track of mostly everything any user could need.

The appearance resembles a leather tome of sorts and it’s just as simple to use. Adding To Do list items is easy enough with the option to add notes, due dates as well as project tags. Further information can be added in the form of time spent, money made, money spent and any connections between projects.

Dividing up items into projects is particularly inspired as it makes it easy for any user devising a new project to see what needs time spent on and how much money is involved. Being able to look at it on a day by day basis is also convenient with the ability to set daily alerts useful for the absent minded. Weave looks set to be a great way of boosting productivity.

Weave is out now. It’s a free app and it’s compatible with all iOS devices.

Friends Events: A Way To Access Facebook Events With An iPhone

Sociable Facebook users will have already noticed that the official Facebook app for the iPhone doesn’t offer any events interaction. Fortunately there’s now an app that offers exactly that. Friends Events allows its users to check out exactly what events their friends are attending, view the events that they have been invited to and RSVP right from within the app.

The actual interface allows for users to view just the basic text description or a map view so that it’s simple to work out exactly where the event is being held. Checking out which friends are going to which events is similarly easy to do. Things like that make Friends Events ideal for those who prefer to deal with Facebook events while on the move rather than in front of a web browser.

Friends Events comes in two varieties. There’s an ad-supported free version or for $0.99, users can enjoy an ad-free experience. It’s out now.

Cooking Light Recipes Review

Cooking Light Recipes is a great and fun way of finding out new healthy recipes

Developer: Time Inc
Price: $3.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0.1
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

iPhone Integration Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.92 out of 5 stars

It’s a good sign when a recipe app offers such attractive photos that even when having only just eaten, my mouth instantly watered at the prospect. Cooking Light Recipes is an accompaniment to the magazine of the same name and it does exactly what anyone could want from a recipe app, offering up enticing propositions that can be combined into a two course meal. Light recipes are obviously the focus in this app but that doesn’t restrict things to substandard quality food by any means.

There are 300 recipes in all, each divided into different categories for easy consultation. For someone such as myself, allergic to pork and red meat on the whole, it’s handy to be able to look under pasta, poultry, vegetarian and fish individually. While users can simply select the entree, sides and desserts for themselves, a tap of the suggested menu button creates a balanced meal plan. This then offers up nutritional information with a green circle indicating at a glance that it’s a healthy combination, with more detailed information covering the specifics such as calories and fat content.

Each recipe idea is simply explained and attractively laid out. Imagery is attractive and enticing which is exactly what’s needed when browsing through any cookery app. Instructions on how to cook the meal are a little squashed at times if the recipe calls for many steps but at least they’re explained well.

Favorite recipes can be saved for future reference as well as shared via e-mail, Facebook or Twitter. There’s no sign of a shopping list feature though which would have been convenient.

Minor blip aside, Cooking Light Recipes is a great little app. All the recipes are appealing and can easily be introduced into a weekly meal plan. It’s an ideal way to eat more healthily without feeling like any major cutbacks are taking place.

Ill-Fated Relationship Review

By
Jennifer Allen on July 6th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: DARK
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

An original and dark graphic novel for the iOS format.

Developer: iSeeToons
Price: $4.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

iPhone Integration Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Substantial and exclusive comic books on the app store aren’t overly plentiful. All too many feel brief and a little unfulfilling, while others such as the Marvel comics app simply provide comics that are available physically too, thus taking away some of the appeal. iSeeToon’s Ill-fated Relationship provides an entirely original and very dark tale that’s gripping from the offset and easy to access from an iOS device.

The tale behind Ill-Fated Relationship is of a decent length with 20 chapters in all. The story focuses on the romance that develops between two serial killers, hence the name. It’s not the most obvious of subject matters but it works well. Character development is conducted well and while the story is incredibly dark, it’s compelling. The ending although hardly a surprise, is still gripping and leaves the reader with a sense of satisfaction at the realisation that they’ve read a good graphic novel.

The art style is minimalist but slightly reminiscent of the style of Frank Miller with Sin City and the Batman series, offering a film noir style that matches the darkness of the story.

As an app, Ill-Fated Relationship is simple enough to use. Annoyingly it takes a couple of minutes to become useable when first loaded but after that, it’s pretty smooth to interact with. A swipe of the finger controls most of what’s needed and it’s easy to get back to the start. Each chapter is separately accessible so it’s not too overwhelming to navigate – a very handy feature in such a lengthy graphic novel. Bonus features also exist with a parody episode of the story as well as two teaser trailers which make for a moment or two of interest.

Ill-Fated Relationship is a mature and interesting graphic novel. It’s refreshing to discover a truly new unique story through such a device. It also works well on the iPhone screen, never feeling cluttered or obscured by the limited screen space. On sale at $4.99, it’s a no-brainer for the graphic novel and film noir fan, but even at the future full price of $8.99, it’s a great experience.
