Adobe Releases Free Official “Adobe Reader” App

Adobe has released their latest app for iOS, bringing one of their most used services to Apple in an official capacity for the first time. That’s right, Adobe Reader is now available as a free universal app. Those guessing Flash, we’re sorry, but that is probably never happening. Still. Adobe Reader allows for PDF files to be opened and displayed from this app.

The advantage that Adobe Reader provides over other PDF reading solutions, which range from apps like GoodReader to even just Apple’s built-in PDF support in Mail and iBooks, comes from DRM support. The app supports files encoded with Adobe LiveCycle Rights Management, as well as PDFs encrypted up to AES256, which Adobe claims is “the highest grade of PDF encryption.” As well, it’s possible to search PDF text and copy text to the clipboard, print PDFs with AirPrint, share PDF files with other applications, and mail PDF files as attachments.

Great Decisions Review

Great Decisions Review

By
on October 19th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: USEFUL
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Bringing clarity to difficult decisions, in theory.

Developer: GreatLife Software
Price: $5.99
Version Reviewed: 1.4
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 4

iPhone Integration Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.25 out of 5 stars

Any therapist will say that the best way to de-stress about a situation and calm down is to write it all down. Can’t sleep? Take five minutes to write down everything that’s stopping sleep from happening. Those five minutes frequently do the trick and a quick writing session can be the path to a healthy night’s sleep. Solving a difficult dilemma is done through a very similar method. Writing the pros and cons of a problem can make all the difference to figuring it out and feeling back in control of life.

Great Decisions hopes to ease its users into making the right decision for them. Offering a clean and simple interface, getting to grips with it is easy. All the user has to do is enter the name or question surrounding the dilemma, then enter the pros and cons relating to it. Users then assign a personal weight to each value to determine what’s most important to them. Great Decisions then totals up the weighted average and presents it at the bottom of the screen. Essentially, it’s a way of focusing on the matter at hand. Standing back and reading the advantages and disadvantages can really provide a moment of clarity.

Different forms of decisions are catered for. While one template can be used to weigh up which job to go for or perhaps even which date, another can be used to prioritize items as part of a list. What needs doing before a much needed holiday from work? List them here to ensure it all gets done and in the correct order. Another template is useful when needing to tally up votes from many people, such as when coming to an important and diplomatic decision. The ability to email decisions and the appropriate attributes is particularly useful when dealing with workplace problems.

Great Decisions is a little pricey for what it offers, weighing in at $5.99. The functionality is strong for the purpose but that’s still a lot for essentially reaching a decision. However, I can see for those who regularly need to solve dilemmas or for those whose brains work well with visual stimulus, this could be just what’s needed. I think I’ll be sticking to just listing things in the built in Notes app.

Chillingo and Plain Vanilla to Launch New Children’s App, The Moogies

Chillingo has announced that they are partnering with Icelandic developer Plain Vanilla to publish a new children’s game for iOS. Entitled The Moogies, this app is intended to be a sort of interactive toy. Children can interact with the various characters and their environments, seeing how each item reacts to the child’s touch. As well, the Moogies react to voice input, so kids get to explore this world on iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch in whatever way they want. The app will be a premium one, with no advertisements, in-app purchases, or external links.

Joe Wee, Co-General Manager of Chillingo says "As more parents adapt to using iOS devices for educational and entertainment purposes, debuting a new children franchise on this innovative platform makes a lot of sense. The Moogies is a fantastic example of how creative apps can transform a child's learning experience." The Moogies will be adorabling themselves on the App Store in November as a universal app. Until then, check out this announcement trailer for the app showing what it’s all about.

7notes HD Premium Review

7notes HD Premium Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: CONVENIENT
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

A powerful handwriting recognition engine makes this app great for notetakers.

Developer: 7knowledge
Price: $8.99
Version Reviewed: 1.1
Device Reviewed On: iPad 2

iPhone Integration Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.92 out of 5 stars

If I was going to be unduly critical of the iPad, I’d refer to it as a glorified paper notebook. For the tiny luddite part of my brain, that’s what it is. I use it frequently to complete work while on the move or write ideas as they come to me. I can type pretty fast on the touch screen keyboard, forever intending to pick up a physical keyboard attachment for it, but sometimes it’s convenient to just be able to write. 7Notes HD Premium allows precisely that.

It’s an app that allows users to write either with their finger or a stylus, instead of typing out information. It’s a lofty ambition with far too many other similar tools struggling to keep up with the speed required of recognizing handwriting on the fly, but 7Notes HD Premium succeeds. I wrote about as fast as I could manage and give or take a few minor errors, the app kept up.

Minor errors aren’t that big a problem fortunately as using a predictive engine, 7Notes HD Premium comes up with suggestions of what the user could be aiming for. This means that it’s quite convenient to just write a few characters out then pick the resulting word from the options that 7Notes HD Premium gives out. There’s also the option to switch to the iPad keyboard and correct a few details if so required.

For the creative writer, or simply those in need of highlighting appropriate text, editing features are plentiful. Users can decorate the words, copy and paste, add indentations, embolden specific words, underline or adjust font size and weight. It’s the ideal collection of options for those writing out notes for a study session later on.

Sharing options are pretty varied with the choice to print, email or share with numerous services. Twitter, Facebook, Dropbox and Evernote functionality is all in there as well as the option to save to PDF.

7Notes HD Premium is an impressive app. I wasn’t sure how powerful the handwriting recognition engine would be but I was thoroughly impressed. It actually provides a great alternative to the keyboard. For the student, in particular, this is an ideal purchase.

Take to the Skies and Aim for First Place in Ikaro Racing HD

NuOxygen has just released “The Racing 3D Flight Simulator,” Ikaro Racing HD for iOS devices, and it’s looking pretty neat. Players will race through a diverse set of environments (and 22 tracks), from sprawling cities to winding canyons, jockeying for first place. It won’t be easy, but it makes winning that much more satisfying.

The game is designed to steadily increase in difficulty, so that players adjust naturally to the curve. It’s meant to be more pleasant than panic-inducing, with cameras that highlight the beauty of the landscape or the details of the planes so that the visuals can truly be appreciated. Of course, spending too much time drinking in the details are a good way to end up face-planting into an obstacle. A danger that becomes even more real when the dynamic weather system opts to replace those clears skies with a thunderstorm.

Ikaro Racing HD was designed with the iPad 2 in mind, but it’s also available for most other iOS devices. It just requires some tweaking in the options menu first. Aspiring air jockeys can grab it off of the App Store right now for free.

Galaxy on Fire 2: HD Review

Galaxy on Fire 2: HD Review

By
on October 19th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: HD-LICIOUS!
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

As a remake of the original version, Galaxy on Fire 2: HD offers a high definition experience made especially for the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2. With beautiful graphics and unique gameplay, this is a great title that offers hours of good ‘ol fashioned space shooting and adventure.

Developer: FISHLABS
Price: $9.99

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

With the recent release of the new iPhone 4S, we are about to see bigger and better games come out of the App Store. Galaxy on Fire 2: HD is one of the first of many to enter the scene as a game specifically designed for the 4S. The Apple A5 chip in the 4S allows this game to really stand out and show off its beauty.

From what I can tell, the gameplay in Galaxy on Fire 2: HD is no different than the original Galaxy on Fire 2 version. The story still follows Keith T. Maxwell, who is transported through time and space after a run in with some unfriendly space pirates. He awakes 35 years later in an unfamiliar region of the galaxy and immediately begins his quest to return to his home planet. Through various missions, side missions, and adventures with pirates and foreign alien races, players help Keith earn money and make connections to get home. A more in-depth review of the gameplay can be read here.

Galaxy on Fire 2: HD really takes full advantage of the A5 chip and the retina display of the iPhone 4S. The graphics are clean and crisp which make for some excellent dog fights with pirates and aliens. The sound is also very rich and full through the speakers on the 4S. In comparing the original to the HD version, I can tell that a lot more detail was added the game environment. The game has been fully optimized and I have not seen any lag during gameplay.

One potentially alarming thing that I did notice was that my iPhone began to get hotter than normal after about ten to fifteen minutes of playing. I have felt my phone get hot with other games, but not after such a short period of time. The game really taxes the phone's system with its heavy graphics and usage of processing power. The game also is a bit of drain on the battery, but that is to be expected.

Overall this is a great game and I would recommend it to anyone that is willing to pay the $9.99 price tag. Unfortunately the game does not come as an update to the original Galaxy on Fire 2 title and must be purchased separately. Although the better graphics and performance of the HD version are nice, they are not worth the steep price of the upgrade. For those who don’t already own the original, Galaxy of Fire 2: HD is great addition to their iPhone 4S game collection.
