Bagatelle Pinball HD Review

This virtual recreation of classic proto-pinball games is perhaps too faithful.

Bagatelle Pinball HD advertises itself as the ancestor of pinball games and after playing it that isn’t too hard to believe. The problem is, pinball games, and really all games, have long since evolved. Bagatelle Pinball HD might work as some sort of anachronistic novelty if only it were more fun to play.

When one imagines “pinball,” chances are flippers and ramps come to mind. This game is actually closer to something like pachinko. Using the touch screen players, launch one of their ten balls onto the field and watch as it hits bumpers and other environmental objects for points before falling into the abyss.

The key word is “watch” because outside of controlling how hard they launch the ball, players have virtually no control over what goes on. Supposedly shaking can effect the ball’s path but it’s subtle. Really though, players will spend most of their watching balls go through a random path, watching it fall, launching another one and repeating the process. When the ball starts bouncing like crazy it can be fun to watch and at a casino, this might’ve been a fun way to make money. However, as a game it can be rather boring.

There are five boards with mildly different stuff for the ball to bounce off of but the change is not too noticeable. From a visual standpoint they seem to be pretty decent retro recreations of actual boards but incredibly detailed wood paneling is as exciting as it sounds. One possible standout is the ninja board. Something about slicing sounds and spinning shurikens is inherently cool. Pinballs hitting against things remains fun and the satisfying sounds are well represented here. Also more boards are coming soon – maybe the overall game will improve.

Players can view their high score but there is no real way to share them so it adds little value. Some may perhaps find a kind of vague, mindless sort of fun in playing Bagatelle Pinball HD. Beyond that though, there are many more engaging games in the App Store.

Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: MULTIPLAYER MADNESS
iPad Only App - Designed for the iPad

Frantic gem based puzzler, with a multiplayer twist!

With a name like Greedy Bankers vs The World, it's pretty obvious who is getting the lion's share of the blame for the current economic climate. Rather than a damning book, or an angry podcast though, this app is actually a puzzle game!

Greedy Bankers vs The World takes an age old puzzle formula, and gives it a bit of a twist. Throughout the game the player will face off against different, rather stereotypical, bankers with the aim of making more cash than they do before the timer hits zero. To get this money the player has to group together gems of the same colour, at which point they will merge into one big block. Tapping this block causes it to disappear, freeing up space on the screen and adding to the total amount of cash earned.

To add to the tension, gems are constantly falling from the top of the screen, potentially ruining a block the player is creating. At certain points a robber will also invade the player's game, stealing away gems and generally being a nuisance. A further obstacle is then introduced, as pieces of rock are randomly generated on screen, which will cordon off gems and stop blocks being made. These rocks can be destroyed if the player moves a block of gems next to them, and taps it.

There's so much going on, and it's down to the player to decide what tactics to use. Only grouping a handful of gems together is quick, but earns less cash, while the more time intensive bigger blocks made out of many gems pay a handsome reward, but may get ruined by gems falling from the top of the screen or a stray rock.

Whatever the player decides to do, it needs to be done quickly because Greedy Bankers vs The World is extremely fast paced. Luckily the control scheme is up to the task, and the gems are moved by simply dragging them across the screen, allowing for blocks to be made speedily.

A big plus in this iPad version is the addition of local multiplayer. With both players using the same device, the game plays out exactly as it does in single player mode, albeit with the option to steal the other player's gems from right off their screen! This adds yet another layer of madness to the falling gems and annoying blocks.

Greedy Bankers vs The World is an absolutely fantastic puzzle game, injecting humour and personality into a tried and tested puzzle formula. The multiplayer is also one of the best on iOS devices.

As a Brit, I’m rather envious of those in the US celebrating Thanksgiving this week. I’m a big fan of family gatherings, time off work and eating plenty of tasty food as any sane person would be. One other big Thanksgiving tradition is that of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

This year marks the 85th Anniversary of the Parade and it also marks the introduction of the offiical app.

MyCityWay’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a free app set to enhance spectators’ experiences of the Parade. It offers information such as the participants of the parade, the Line of March, the parade route, inflation event locations and the history behind it.

There’s also a comprehensive guide to new York City bundled with the app that includes dining locations and reviews, popular and nearby coffee shops and Wi-Fi spots as well as a subway map and other useful information such as nearby restrooms.

On the day, there’ll be traffic cameras viewable in real time to check out what’s going on plus a way of tracking various Cheerleading, Dance Troupes and Marching Bands.

The official Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is out now and it’s free to download.

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: OCCUPIED
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

INC is a comic book-inspired action-platformer from retro revival enthusiasts OrangePixel.

Developer: OrangePixel
Price: $1.99

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

INC is the latest game from OrangePixel, continuing their run of retro-styled action-platformers. This goal in each level is to try and activate three boosters in order to open up the level gate. The game has a light storyline about futuristic mega-corporations taking over the world and replacing people with robots. As such, most enemies are either random goons dressed and armed to kill, or deadly robots of all shapes and sizes. Players can get stars for killing all enemies, activating all the boosters in underneath the time limit, and for finishing with extra health. Players also can earn experience from killing enemies that can be used to power up their main weapon.

INC is great for short pick up and play sessions; OrangePixel seems to have the pacing of their games down pat. The game features cloud-based saving through OpenFeint, so stars and experience can transfer between devices. I don’t just mean between iOS devices, either; even the Android version of the game can load up cloud saves. The OrangePixel pixel art style is well in effect here, and the balance of monochromatic characters and backgrounds works really well to give the game a distinct look. Remote controls are supported, from Joypad and iCade on iOS, to keyboard and Xperia Play support on Android.

The level-up system is very annoying, in that gaining points to level up is extremely slow, then a huge amount is lost on dying. Pretty much the only way to level up is to replay the early levels over and over again, so that dying in new levels won’t reduce the meter that much. It’s just an extremely poorly implemented and user-unfriendly element that should have been revised or scrapped entirely. A lot of boosters are hidden in the environment, and thus require the shooting of random blocks in order to discover them, which doesn’t feel all that fair.

INC is not perfect, but it’s another solid action-platformer from OrangePixel. Fans of games with cloud-based saves and remote control support will want to check this one out.

Guide a falling star and collect dreams.

The premise behind Seraph is actually quite endearing. From every wish made a star is born, but that star needs dreams to help it survive and grow. Forgoing any sort of weaponry or violent conduct, the player's task is to control a falling star, helping it collect dreams whilst avoiding the nasty nightmares that plague the land.

Behind the story, Seraph is all about chasing high scores. The level scrolls constantly to the right as the screen is bombarded with all sorts of objects. Dreams, which take on the form of dots coloured blue, are essential for the star to survive, and every one collected adds to the star meter at the bottom of the screen, as well as earning the player points. Then there are the nightmares, which are coloured red. Collecting these corrupts the star, causing the star meter to reduce which generally means game over if it happens too often. The effects of nightmares can be negated by quickly hunting down some dreams.

At points the star can be upgraded, which means that when a particularly large nightmare comes flying past the player can slow time and use the 'cleanse' ability to turn the nightmare into a dream, along with a healthy boost in points. The aim is to get as far as possible, earning as many points as possible.

Seraph gives the player the choice of using either tilt or touch controls. Choose touch and the star is controlled via a virtual pad, while tilt requires the device to be moved in the direction the star needs to go. Touch controls work perfectly, but tilt never felt particularly responsive.

Graphically, while never dazzling, Seraph is certainly interesting enough to hold the player's attention, with an interesting background effect. The audio also suits the game very well, with chanting, stringed instruments and drums all building in intensity the further the player progresses through a level.

Seraph is certainly a good game. While those looking for variety might come away disappointed, fans of beating high scores will definitely find much to enjoy as things do get pretty intense.

From Nascar to F1, people of all sorts of tastes and backgrounds can have an affinity for cars. Just look at the size of the crowds an auto show can bring in. Pyrolia is trying to bring that experience home for car lovers everywhere with ROAD inc, their new iPad app.

The app boasts an impressive amount of content featuring dozens of videos and engine sounds, hundreds of photos and pages of car descriptions and 3,000 archival documents like ads and press releases. Most notably though is the effort that went into the 3D renders of classic cars like the 1970 Porsche 917 K or the Rolls Royce Phantom II. Pyrolia spent over a million dollars working with automotive auction houses, factories and restoration specialists in order to bring these cars to life using the software behind Avatar and The Lord of The Rings.

Costing $9.99, ROAD inc may sound a bit pricey. However, considering the alleged amount of detail, one can see the argument that, as with a nice car, it’s a premium price for a premium product.
