Star Legends! (3D MMO) Finally Arrives for iOS!

If you could see us now, you’d notice our heightened excitement, heavy breathing, and elevated heart rates. We had a chance to preview this epic scifi MMO for iPhone, iPad (and Android, and eventually PC) last February at GDC, and have been waiting with bated breath ever since. Got any gum?

Star Legends, nee The Blackstar Chronicles, is by SpaceTime Studios, makers of the highly regarded Pocket Legends MMO. This new game, set in a fantastic scifi universe, promises to bring the same seamless massively multiplayer action to a whole new genre and audience, improving upon an already successful MMO system. There is a ton of backstory and a whole new universe of content planned for the game, so we’re hoping for a nice long run of it. When we previewed the game at GDC, there were tons of art and backstory hung on almost every wall of the suite we met with the dev and PR team, making our inner scifi geeks squee with delight.

Here’s the description form the team’s Facebook page. Can it get any more exciting!?

The doors of the UCS Blackstar will soon open to privateers who have come to make their fortunes and fame, perhaps at the expense of their very lives! Rumors abound that the residents of UCS Blackstar have discovered an alien presence on a nearby colony. Seeing an opportunity to turn a quick profit, countless privateers leap into action to carve out their fate among the stars.

There was a delay in getting the iOS version of the game out, as the Android version has been out for quite a while.

The iOS version is a Universal app, and is available right now in the App store for free. Various in-app purchases are available, though if Pocket Legends is any guide, they should not be necessary for gameplay. Stay tuned here for our full review soon.

Search for Words Online as the Clock Counts Down With Wordy Findy

It hasn’t been until recently that I’ve really begun to explore my iPhone’s capacity for online gaming. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s certainly not the best platform for drawn-out battles, but it’s great for quick random matches. And it’s a good fit for a game like Wordy Findy.

There’s absolutely nothing to it: just download the app (for free), choose a name to play under and just wait for the next game to start. Matchmaking is handled automatically. Once a game starts, players have around two minutes to find as many words as possible by tracing a line between connecting letters. Completed words earn points based on the values of the letters used and handy information like total available words and points are shown after each game. A scoreboard with each participant’s name and score is also displayed between rounds, igniting those instinctual fires of competition while still providing the more humble with anonymity.

Wordy Findy is in the App Store right now, and it’s completely free. Ad-supported with banners displayed at the bottom of the screen (mercifully out of the way), but still free.

Sprinkle: Water Splashing Fire Fighting Fun! Review

By
on August 25th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: WET & WILD
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Sprinkle makes fighting fire with physics (and water, of course) a heck of a lot of fun.

Developer: Mediocre Games
Price: $0.99
Version: 1.0
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.44 out of 5 stars

Human beings are always the real monsters, aren’t they? It’s a fairly common twist to a story these days (so I suppose it’s not that much of a twist anymore), but to an extent I’d still call it a valid assessment. I mean, human kind has been trashing the planet for quite a while now, right? It seems natural to assume that sometime in the future we’ll be responsible for upsetting the delicate ecosystem of a planet full of innocent little blob-things simply by driving an interstellar tour bus too close to their atmosphere.

Sprinkle: Water Splashing Fire Fighting Fun! puts players in charge of the blob-planet’s seemingly solitary fire engine, and tasks them with (what else?) dousing the blazes started by some careless passersby. Initially this is pretty simple stuff: just point the hose at the fires and press the button to start the water. Adjusting height is as simple as touching and dragging on the nozzle, and angle adjustments by dragging anywhere else on the screen. It isn’t until the later half of the first world, and pretty much all of the second, that things get a bit more complicated.

Sprinkle is one of those deceptively complex games. What begins as merely pointing water spouts at fire evolves into some pretty perplexing and downright crazy physics puzzles. Some might require foresight because opening up a path to one blaze might completely block another, and others use timing and a steady aim so that crevices can be blocked so that the water can reach a new area.

If the physics didn’t work this could be problematic, but it all comes together surprisingly well and makes for one heck of a fun and addicting game. Having to earn a set number of “drops” or whatever they are in order to access the next level is both maddening and brilliant. It forces me to replay past levels in order to earn a better rank, rather than just be content with my mere 1 drop and be done with it. All-in-all, I wouldn’t call that a bad thing.

As much as I enjoy the physics-heavy puzzles, they can be a tad too detailed. What I mean is, sometimes the difference between getting that block in the right place and having to restart (again) boils down to physics-luck. I’ve also experienced some slowdown during moments with lots of water on screen, which I initially attributed to having downloads in the background, but have since experienced even when nothing else was going on.

It feels like it’s over a bit too soon. There is a third area to unlock through an in-app purchase, but I’m not too sure how I feel about paying for a third bonus world right out of the gate. However I can’t deny that the other two, with their 22 levels between them, are a complete blast.

Doodle Dungeon Fills That Special Old-School Void

Fun Vault Games has just released Doodle Dungeon on an unsuspecting App Store. And while it may be a little too obvious with its inspirations (read: it’s Gauntlet with doodles), it also captures the essence as well or even better than most other iOS attempts. That and it doesn’t cost a dime.

Now when I say it’s “a little too obvious,” I don’t just mean that it uses the same top-down perspective. It also features the same four classes (warrior, wizard, Valkyrie and ranger/elf), the same floor-to-floor progression, the same mobs of enemies pouring out of destructible generators and even the same level layouts in a few places. I’m not crying foul or anything, because it doesn’t attempt to hide any of this, but it’s something worth noting. For better or worse.

I’m inclined to think it’s for the better though, seeing as there’s no official iOS release (of Gauntlet) available right now. It’s bound to excite anyone who’s poured hours into any of the original game’s iterations, from the arcade to the PlayStation Network store. Doodle Dungeon is available right now, and I reiterate: it’s totally free.

Photovine Review

A new way to share photos.

At the foundation of Photovine is the idea that people like to share and discuss their photos with one another. Indeed, this truth is what drives much of the activity on social networks like Facebook. Users often post photos to see what their friends will say about them – and they like to comment on their friend’s photos as well.

Simply put, Photovine strives to offer a concentrated photo sharing/commenting experience – not unlike Facebook or any other social network, really – but with its own twist.

The app features a clean interface that’s easy to navigate. Users create their own profile, from which they manage their profile picture and friends list, as well as their uploaded photos. When users upload a photo, they tag it with a caption or “vine,” which functions essentially as a category. Users can browse through vines, viewing other user photos relevant to that caption. For example, there’s a vine devoted to “Blue Steel” – a reference to the 2001 comedy Zoolander – in which users upload their best version of Derrick Zoolander’s winning pose. At the time of publish, other vines on the front page include, “My Wedding Ring,” “How I like My Pizza,” Embarrassing School Portraits,” as well as many others.

The concept is certainly fun. Browsing through the different vines, there’s a lot of user participation in the form of others uploading photos, which is key for this kind of app. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for comments. Thankfully, at the heart of Photovine is the idea of sharing imagery, not necessarily words, so the lack of user discussion isn’t a significant concern.

There are lots of places to share and look at photos – whether it’s Facebook or Flickr – but Photovine offers its own unique twist on the experience. Definitely worth checking this one out.

Japanese Film Company Releases Pair of Production Apps

Aoi Advertising Promotion, a large Tokyo-based TV commercial production company, has recently launched an initiative to bring their knowledge of film production to crews everywhere in the form of iPhone apps. The first of these apps, Director's Finder and Frame Watch, are now available on the App Store in their original Japanese-language forms.

Director's Finder allows location scouts to turn their iPhones into virtual cameras capable of simulating various kinds of film stock and lens focal points. This includes the ability the mimic over 50 real-world cameras by Arri, Sony, Canon, Panasonic, RED, Weisscam and more as well as standard film formats like 16mm and 35mm. The captured footage can then be shared via email along with GPS coordinates and other relevant data.

Frame Watch's price is $2.99 compared to Director's Finder's current sale price of $7.99 ($15.99 normally and also available in a lite version) and its feature set is appropriately less robust. Basically it is a stopwatch with a calculator built-in that allows directors to easily determine frame rates. There are presets for 24, 30, and 60 frames per second.

Stay tuned for more info on Aoi's upcoming film apps.
