TITUS – politics is not a game Review

Our Rating: ★★★★☆ :: ONE TWISTED ELECTION
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

TITUS proves that, yes, politics is indeed not a game. It’s actually a collection of mini-games.

Welland is in need of a new president. The current leader, a cruel and heartless mime, has made existence miserable for all of the land’s residents. It’s not just him, either. There’s a network of corrupt government officials spread throughout the various cities that need to be removed from power. Fortunately for Welland there’s a meek, agoraphobic watchmaker named Titus who’s ready to set things right.

I was pretty much expecting TITUS – politics is not a game to be a collection of mini-games and I wasn’t wrong. However, I wasn’t expecting those mini-games to be wrapped in a political campaign simulator. Yes, in TITUS, players get to compete with evil politicians to gain the popular vote. Each campaign is divided into turns, and it’s up to the player to decide what to do for each of them. Try to raise funds? Hold a meeting to gain support? Spread rumors about a rival? It’s all possible. Most activities require money, though, so it’s important to try and balance opinion-building with getting cash. Of course, while all this is happening the opposing politicians aren’t just sitting on their hands. They’ll raise their own funds, spread their own rumors and attempt to keep their cozy government job no matter the cost.

I was honestly surprised by just how solid the simulation aspects of TITUS are. They’re somewhat simple, to be sure, but all of the tasks and mini-games fit the theme quite well and are never unwelcome. Of course, a good amount of the game’s appeal comes from the Burton-esque visuals and the rather twisted story they portray. Most of the detail is in the hand-drawn portraits and static story panels, but the mini-games (all comprised of at least some polygonal elements) also do well to maintain the style. How much a person enjoys the look of TITUS depends largely on their love for Gothic imagery, but it’s a good looking game in its own right.

It can be a little confusing at first to just dive in to a political campaign, however. Most of the descriptions for a given action are a bit vague and don’t always give a clear indication as to whether or not it will affect one’s Honesty. As for the mini-games, the only one I’m not all that excited about is the one that involves jumping from mailbox to mailbox distributing propaganda. The tilt controls are too floaty. Thankfully, this one’s entirely optional.

TITUS certainly wasn’t what I was expecting, but I’ve had plenty of fun with it. The mini-games kept the simulation aspects from dragging, while those same simulation aspects kept me invested for the long term. I would definitely suggest that iOS users with a taste for light sims should check this out.

Yep, here we are once again. A new week, a new bunch of book apps. We browse through the stacks of weekly releases so you don’t have to. Here are our picks for this week:

More and more people are seeing the value in reading on their mobile device. Another entry into this burgeoning app scene is BeyondPrint Reader by PBD Wordwide Fulfillment Services. This universal app will allow users access to EPUB and PDF based content, the two formats that are quickly becoming the industry standard. If that’s not enough to warrant a download, perhaps the FREE price is.

Back In Time, by Landka, is a multimedia interactive book that takes readers back through the defining moments in the history of the universe, life, and humankind. The book is based on a simple conceit: what if the universe started 24 hours ago? The book follows the clock forward from midnight and the big bang all the way forward to now. It’s made specifically for iPad and contains over 300 images as well as animations, videos, and illustrated timelines.

Ladybug Girl finds her own fun with a pair of wings, her pet dog, and a capable imagination in this interactive book from the New York Times bestselling book by David Soman and Jacky Davis and published by Penguin Group USA. There are musical, animated adventures to be had in the universal app named for the main character, as well as fun mini games – along with full voice narration.

Sometimes, readers also want to be authors. For all of those wanting to be published folks out there, Red Jumper Studio has published Book Creator for iPad, an iPad-only authoring system to create that stunning children, photo, art, cook or text book they already have inside them. Teachers and parents can also use this book with their children and students, guiding the sometimes tedious process of getting a book from idea to paper to bound volume.

Pirates and Ninjas Bury the Hatchet in Pixel Whirled

Holmade Games, creators of Hurdle Turtle and preservers of all things retro, have recently unleashed their newest creation on the App Store. Pixel Whirled is an arcade shooter in which players have to constantly flip back and forth between the ninja and pirate sides of the screen while shooting down encroaching waves of enemies. Isn’t it nice when two mortal enemies can put aside their differences in the name of self-preservation?

Pixel Whirled has received a few new additions in its transition from an Xbox Live Indie Game to iOS. Mostly the expected Game Center Achievements and touch controls, but it looks as though a few “super cool” power-ups have also been thrown in. This is all in addition to the retro arcade goodness already contained within, of course.

If Pixel Whirled sounds interesting (and really, why wouldn’t it?), why not do a quick search for it on the App Store? It’s available right now for the low cost of one dollar.

The App Store has seen its fair share of messaging, email and social networking apps. The new grouptime app, from the start-up company grouptime GmbH, hopes to set itself apart from the rest by combining the best of these services into one. Grouptime is a new kind of mobile social messaging service.

Grouptime takes inspiration from three forms of online communication: text messaging, email, and social networking. The app allows users to send SMS-style messages for free. Users can also share content with specific groups of friends in email-style distribution lists. Finally, like with any good social network, users of grouptime can update their status and location, chat with groups, and instantly share audio, photos and other multimedia.

Grouptime boasts extensive privacy features as well as a “simplified user interface.” Grouptime is currently available for free on the App Store for iPhones, iPods and iPads. An android version is currently on the way.

My Horse Review

By
on September 26th, 2011
Our Rating: ★★★★½ :: WIN, PLACE AND SHOW
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

My Horse may be a freemium pet sim about horses, but it’s a GREAT freemium pet sim about horses.

Developer: NaturalMotion Games
Price: Free
Version: 1.1.1
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Playtime Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Replay Value Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.44 out of 5 stars

In all honesty, I wasn’t expecting to be all that into My Horse when I first downloaded it for review. I’m just not a horse guy. That said, I was completely blown away by My Horse. It’s not what anyone would call “exciting,” but it’s a fantastically made freemium game that doesn’t penalize players for failing to spend real money on fake money.

Everyone starts off with one horse. They can name it, interact with it a bit, then start feeding and caring for it through a series of pseudo-mini-games. As with virtually all free-to-play games most of the content is tied to actual time, so a lot of activities and tasks can only be done once every hour or so. Of course, the longer the task the greater the rewards. Fortunately it’s not all about waiting for the count-down timer to hit zero. There are other things to be done during that downtime that either recharge within ten minutes (grooming, cleaning the pen, etc…) , or take no time at all (petting and feeding).

Most of these activities, especially the show tasks like hurdles and cones, would probably seem much less interesting if it weren’t for My Horse‘s exceptional visuals. The riders may look like they’ve been dragged up from the deepest, darkest depths of the Uncanny Valley but the horses all look great and animate almost perfectly. On the gameplay side of things, there’s almost always something to do. When players aren’t “cashing in” completed timed tasks involving equine hygiene or riding lessons, they can train for shows, compete in shows, dust off their horse, feed it, clear out its exercise area or buy prettier tack to improve its score during one of those shows. Certain items or feed will require gems (the in-app-purchase currency of choice), but earning these gaudy rocks isn’t all that tough. And in the case of the special feed, it’s not even necessary as the horse regains energy pretty fast when it’s not exerting itself.

It’s a little disappointing that all of the other horse breeds aren’t really breeds, but rather new textures on the same model. I imagine this was done to reduce memory usage and storage space, but it’s still kind of a let down. It’s also a shame that the list of “quests” (or tasks or whatever) only ever displays two at a time. It makes tracking active ones tougher than it should be when there are three or more of them.

My Horse has done something I never expected an iOS game to do: awaken my inner 9 year-old girl. If someone had told me a month ago that I’d actually be interested in horses, much less fully invested in a horse care simulation, I’d have openly laughed at them. What a difference a game makes, huh?

Looking for Writers at 148Apps!

Thank you for using rssforward.com! This service has been made possible by all our customers. In order to provide a sustainable, best of the breed RSS to Email experience, we've chosen to keep this as a paid subscription service. If you are satisfied with your free trial, please sign-up today. Subscriptions without a plan would soon be removed. Thank you!

We're looking for a few great writers with a strong passion for iPhone applications. People that love grabbing a new app, figuring out it's strengths and weaknesses, and telling the world about the best of the apps they find. With close to 500,000 apps in the app store, we'll never get to all of them. But, we do want to get to the best ones. That’s why we need you.

The ideal app reviewer will devour apps and games, writing about them quickly and authoritatively. You should have a good critical eye and the ability to express yourself well. You should be able to self edit your own posts and deliver them ready to publish. And, most importantly, good app reviewers should be able to do all this while keeping the review fun and interesting, using the common voice of the site.

All review writers should be able to jump back and forth amongst apps and games, but extra points if you have a passion for non-gaming apps and a nose for finding the best ones across the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

Think you have the chops? Check out our requirements here:

You:
- have an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and think it's the best thing since sliced bread
- have a general knowledge of and interest in the iPhone community
- can write at a relatively high level, like what you might see in a magazine or newspaper
- have some familiarity with WordPress or similar CMS platform
- have the time to write and post at least three to five reviews a week

What do you get? Writing for 148Apps gets you exposure. And lots of it. With millions of eyes reading your posts, there's a lot of exposure to be had. You also get some money, per post, at a competitive rate. That’s not bad, right? We do ask that you only apply if you can keep up a regular posting frequency. While this isn't a full time job, it's not a once-in-a-while hobby either.

If you think this is something you might be interested it, get familiar with our review style and send us three of your best clips. These are the best portfolio work of review writing you’ve done. The closer to an app review your clips are, the better chance we’ll have of understanding your style. Don’t have any written samples? Write one up! Pick your favorite app or two and write up a 300 – 500 word review, with proper spelling and grammar, and email it to helpwanted {at} 148apps {dot} com. We look forward to hearing from you, and we’ll get back to you soon.
