Plump Review

PLump loves his chocolate in this cute little rotating game.

Graphics / Sound Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Chocolate will make some people do the craziest things. The same is apparently true for fat little round creatures like Plump. Plump doesn’t do much other than consume any chocolate that he comes into contact with. Unfortunately for him, Plump can’t reach the morsels of chocolate that are spread across every level by himself. The player must help Plump get his goodies by rotating the entire level as he falls, guiding him through the maze-like stages.

The goal is actually to get Plump from one end of the each stage to another. Plump cannot be propelled or push himself in any direction, so it is the physics of the game that propels Plump along. Gravity, walls, bumpers, and other obstacles help move Plump around each level. The gameplay isn’t unlike the King specific levels in Rolando. The player rotates the level and Plump rolls and bounces his way around, eating any chocolate he come into contact with.

There are a few power-ups in the game which change things up from time to time. One changes Plump into some kind of heavy spiked ball and allows him to crash through wooden walls. Another is a bubble that envelops Plump and allows him to descend more slowly and avoid hazards that he might not otherwise be able to avoid. Used wisely, both power-ups will allow Plump to reach more chocolate bits as well.

It’s isn’t required to eat all the chocolate in each level to finish the level, but eating more chocolate will give players a higher score and a higher star rating after each level is finished. Going back through the levels to get more starts adds some life to the game, which is needed because it doesn’t take very long to play through the game’s 32 levels. The developer is working on more levels, however, and they should be available via update when they are finished.

Overall the game is not very difficult at all and most of the levels tend to fall on the easy side of things. Hopefully the new levels in development now will ratchet up the difficulty a bit for some added challenge. Getting three stars on each stage does provide a more challenging experience for those looking to spend more time with the game.

Plump is cute and fun. The physics are reliable and the control is responsive. Though it would be interesting to have the option to control the game by rotating the device, the touch controls work well. The game is short enough that a few sittings will take a player through all of the currently available levels, but the levels are fun and enjoyable even if they are short.

Continuity 2: The Continuation Review

Rearrange the levels to ‘continue’ the platforming and reach the exit.

As the iOS continues to mature as a gaming platform, we’re slowly starting to see something that’s become a staple of the other gaming platforms becoming much more prevalent: sequels. However, here we have a sequel for which the original was never on iOS; the first Continuity was actually a web-based game. So I was keen to take a look at Continuity 2: The Continuation, which brings the same game style but remade solely for iPhones and iPads.

This game mixes puzzling with platforming gameplay styles in a totally unique way. Basic platforming tasks are carried out with some simple touch-based control methods; touching left or right halves of the screen to move in a chosen direction and swiping upwards in order to execute jumps. But where most platformers would have the screen-scrolling as the edge is approached, Continuity 2 introduces the puzzle aspect – this is where the ‘continuity’ comes into play.

Double-tapping the screen causes the camera to zoom out, revealing three tiles with different parts of the level on each. It’s then the player’s job to slide and rearrange these tiles so that the little stick-man can ‘continue’ on his journey to collect coins, grab the key and exit the level through the door. The faster it’s done and the more coins collected, the higher the score that’s achieved in the end. This starts off very simple with only maybe one or two exit/entry points on each tile, but as further levels are unlocked the tiles often present many viable arrangements and are often needed to be used several times each in order to grab everything along the way.

It’s a lot of fun while also making gamers think a whole lot about the best way to head, but the ‘against-the-clock’ nature of the game seems like a bit of a strange decision for a game that often requires a good look over in order to find the best choice to solve the task at hand. What this also means is that simply going back over a level for a second or third time will vastly improve high scores. There are two things that need to be highly complimented here, though. The level design is amazing. The broken-up nature of the separate tiles means everything has to be very well thought out, and it is. And, the music is given a touch of detail that’s usually unseen in this type of game. Drum beats fade out as the tile-view is displayed and when platforming resumes, the mellow tones are given some kick alongside a sense of urgency as the beats are reintroduced and the volume raises.

For me personally, though, there seemed to be a little something missing from Continuity 2: The Continuation. Whether it was the very basic visual style or the fact that just playing a level twice can alleviate much of the need for any real skill, something didn’t quite gel for me. Some really good factors are in there which will very much appeal to the more casual iOS gamers, but for the more competitive veterans out there, a few cracks will emerge after a short period of playtime.

Feevo HD Review

Feevo HD offers addictive Match Three fun with a twist – no, really!

Developer: Tetris Online
Price: $2.99

Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars
Game Controls Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4.25 out of 5 stars

Overall Rating: 4.13 out of 5 stars

Approaching Feevo HD with a certain amount of cynicism would be understandable. After all, it looks like a Bejewelled clone and the app store is overflowing with those. It’s even the app equivalent of a Facebook game and offers in-app purchases. Everything about it suggests formulaic mediocrity, at least on paper. In reality, it might be nothing new but it offers a gaming experience that is addictive enough to make its players forget everything as they game.

Feevo HD goes one further than the Match Three genre, offering Match Four. It makes a difference as after years of matching three, it’s all too easy to forget and focus on three gems rather than four or more. Two game modes are on offer with Fever and Blaze. Fever has no time limit, instead offering an action limit that can be restored after completing certain activities. Blaze mode sets a strict time limit to proceedings with speed being the important part rather than careful gem clearing.

In both cases, players must match as many sets of four or more gems as possible with the more matched at once, the more points and other powers are unlocked. Huge combos can be accrued with relative ease and it’s immensely satisfying hearing the voiceover exclaim ‘fever’ at you as and when it happens. It all feels very arcade like in nature and brings back many a fond memory of arcade puzzlers. There’s not a hint of slow down either with the graphical style consistently sharp and responsive throughout.

Throughout the game, power-ups appear to help boost scores and a levelling up system also exists which further unlocks new power-ups and features. It’s compelling stuff for an already addictive title. Feevo coins are gained through playing the game and can in turn be exchanged for power-ups. Players always have the option of buying coins also for real money but it’s not really essential.

While Feevo HD treads very familiar ground, it does so with style, offering up an addictive combination of its own. Gaining experience is simply the icing on the cake no doubt keeping players hooked for a long time to come. It’ll certainly be sticking around on my iPad.

Apple Today Announced 15 Billion Downloads; At 1 Billion+ Downloads Per Month Pace

Apple today announced that the App Store has delivered over 15 billion downloads, up from 14 billion just over a month ago. At the current rate, users are downloading over 32 million apps per day, more than seen in the entire first month of the App Store.

"In just three years, the revolutionary App Store has grown to become the most exciting and successful software marketplace the world has ever seen," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "Thank you to all of our amazing developers who have filled it with over 425,000 of the coolest apps and to our over 200 million iOS users for surpassing 15 billion downloads."

This amazing growth in downloads can be accredited to the acceptance of the iOS platform and speaks to the amazing feat that Apple has accomplished with iOS. While iOS has been called an closed ecosystem, and to some degree it is, the control that Apple has maintained has allowed the whole system to work smoothly as a whole. That in turn has lead to a better application lifecycle for developers and a better way to get new apps for consumers. All while minimizing the issues we see on other platforms with hardware and OS fragmentation leading to app availability issues.

MacRumors has created a graph with data points shown for each announcement Apple have made for download numbers.

Graph credit: MacRumors

As we can see, the growth has kept up a nice pace and fairly closely matches a logarithmic growth scale. Very impressive indeed. With the impending updates to the iPod touch and iPhone lines, we can expect the growth to continue to take off.

Google Docs is about collaboration, but as many of us know, others often rely on us even when we're nowhere near a computer. That's why we're excited to bring the features you need to your tablet and mobile device's browser. Today, we've updated the look of Google Docs for mobile browsers and added the ability to sort, narrow, and share multiple docs in your mobile docs list.

To get started, go to docs.google.com from your supported device's browser. Press Sort to organize the list of docs visible in the mobile browser, or press Narrow by to specify the subset of docs you'd like to see.

To share from your mobile docs list, select one or more documents, press the Share button, and select Share, Get the link to share for public or unlisted docs, or Email as attachment. Sharing a doc in your mobile browser works the same way as it does on the desktop.

We're committed to improving the experience of accessing your docs from your mobile device. We'd love to hear what you think is working and what isn't in our support forums as well as in the comments of this post.
