Our Rating: ★★★☆☆ :: FALLS FLAT
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

The unpredictable physics of this coin tossing game is liable to leave players wanting to throw their devices against the wall instead of coins.

There’s an old coin game where the object is to toss a coin towards a wall getting it as close to the wall as possible without touching it. Pitch ‘N’ Toss is what that game would look like if it were created by some fiendish carny with a penchant for neon colors, woodworking, and pinball machines.

The goal of Pitch ‘N’ Toss is to flick a coin and get it as close to the stage’s far wall as possible. Here, touching the wall is allowed and is actually awarded the highest score. To accomplish this, players must deftly flick their coins and get them through various obstacles including hoops, force fields, and goo traps. There are also several aides like cannons, flippers, bounce pads, and shortcut tubes to help players guide their coins to the wall. While it is almost always possible to just toss a coin over all of a stage’s obstacles without any help, more points are awarded for using these aides.

Once each coin comes to rest a score is awarded based on how far away from the wall it rests. Players receive three coins each round and must attain a certain score level with those three coins before progressing to the next stage. The score levels needed to advance are easy to miss, though, because they only show up briefly towards the bottom of the screen at the start of each round.

The frenzied pinball-like action of ricocheting coins off of obstacles and shooting them out of cannons is a great deal of fun, when it works. The problem with Pitch ‘N’ Toss lies in the unpredictability of the game’s physics. Trying to gauge how far and high each flick will send a coin is almost impossible and getting a toss just right seems to require more luck than anything else. With a little practice this becomes easier, but precision is not this game’s strong suit.

The stages are creative and well designed and they provide some entertaining moments. In fact, the game could be quite addictive if it weren’t for the frustration of fighting against wild tosses. This is a game best played in small doses. For a bit of extra value, Pitch ‘N’ Toss also includes a versus mode where players compete by passing the device. Just be sure that everyone playing is well in control of their tempers or this game might send them into a rage.

Joining Hands Review

Our Rating: ★★★½☆ :: THOUGHTFUL FUN
Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Joining Hands is a clever new logic puzzler that requires thought and patience and pays out in fun.

The Whispering Woods are home to the Peablins, stars of the new logic puzzle, Joining Hands, by 10tons, and they need your help to make them smile.

Making the Peablins happy is simple; as the game title suggests, it's all about holding hands.

The object is to place unhappy Peablins, how many and what kind are based on the level's difficulty, onto a game grid, adjacent to others in order to lock hands.

Each character has a set number of hands; you need to connect them all to make them smile and progress to the next level.

The graphics are rich on both the iPhone’s retina display and iPad’s 9.7″ LED screen, and the game mechanics are simple and fluid.

Just drag and drop Peablins where you think they ought to go. Hands will connect to available hands automatically. You can make one chain or several smaller chains on the game board, as long as you make everyone happy.

There are several varieties of Peablins, each with its own rules: some can join hands in any direction, others are fixed, and some are just plain hard to please. There are also obstacles, score boosters and power-ups.

Gamers have voiced concern that the game may be too complex (it's actually quite simple, but it's hard to tell from the iTunes description) and general confusion over how it all works, so 10Tons made this gameplay video to help clarity:

While the characters and some levels are kid-friendly, this game is not child's play. The difficulty increases rapidly and while you won't be pulling out your hair in frustration, the game does require a fair amount of mental gymnastics.

There are no leaderboards or achievements as yet, nor any gaming network integration. There are also, at present, only five worlds (not including the tutorial) with 12 levels on each. 10Tons promises more levels are coming in an update soon, and they are considering adding in-game goals. Both would improve replay value significantly.

Joining Hands is distinct in that is really is a pure logic game. It takes trial and error and patience too. But it's a challenge and with the App Store bursting at the seems with physics, matching and action puzzlers, this is a novel treat. The game is sure to please any clever puzzle-lovers. It's definitely worth checking out.

Chillingo had quite the busy week last week; recent release and iPhone Game of the Week recipient Feed Me Oil hit number one on the iPhone App Store. As well, their published title Cut The Rope, developed by ZeptoLab, won an Apple Design Award. On top of all this, Chillingo announced that their apps have reached 140 million total downloads. In order to help increase that number, they’ve released several new games and updates for their current titles.

Rocket Bunnies is an action platformer where players must navigate an eponymous Rocket Bunny around planets, using their gravity to feed hungry bunnies throughout the game’s 60 levels. Controls are as simple as tapping on a different planet to fly to it, keeping timing of where the Rocket Bunny is in account to launch at the proper angle, with boost bonuses available for launching at certain spots. The game is available now for iPhone/iPod touch and iPad.

SEED 2 Free is a free version of the second entry in Chillingo and CH Games’ action-RPG franchise for iOS. The game promises over 200 battlefields, 24 villages, and a wide variety of missions, all culminating with multiple endings. This is the same game as the $0.99 full version, just supported by ads on the title screen and in the character status/inventory menus. There are also in-app purchases for SEED points that can be used for in-game upgrades.

As well as these new releases, Spider Jack, recently discussed on The Portable Podcast, has gotten a new set of 25 levels. The veritcally-scrolling shmup Sky Combat has been updated with a new Arctic Campaign. Finally, the action/puzzle game Collision Effect has gotten a new game type, called “Life Force Mode.” Chillingo have been publishing a lot of games this year, and between these recent releases and updates and other titles previously announced, there’s sure to be more to come.
