Serious fantasy football players know to get a big jump on their competition by starting their studying and research early. As a serious player and despite the lockout, I've started my preparation. Rantek Inc. seems to be one of the first on the scene with a fantasy football preparation and draft kit app.

The most important feature of FFC 2011 (2011 Fantasy Football Calculator & Draft Kit HD) is the point calculator. The player can input point information for up to three leagues. For example, my main keeper league awards one point for every 25 passing yards. So I would enter 25/1 or just 25 in that category for that league. Once all of this point information has been entered, the player can enter the projected stats for any player and the app outputs projected points for each league.

Other features include a checklist to use on draft day to keep track of what players have gone off the board, bye weeks for each teams, team schedules, scratch paper for each checklist and each league, and a draft day soundboard.

The majority of fantasy football players go with a simple pen/pencil list and notes for draft day (even the serious players). And despite the rise of apps for literally everything, I've been the only player using iPads and iPhones on draft day in all of my leagues. The most technology anyone else has used is an Excel sheet on a laptop or a printed out Word document. While I wanted an app that shouldered the load a little more as a draft kit (like an editable list of players and a database of players to work with and add notes to), the app focuses on more of that pen/pencil feel. I actually contacted the developers about the app and that's what their intention was,

Our app is structured the way you would prepare with paper and pencil (the old fashioned way), except you can capture it in your iPad. I know other apps are more automated, but this was the best we could do and there’s something about typing in the numbers that helps you get a better feel for the players and what they can do.

As for problems with the app, I noticed a bit of a bug. A few times, when I closed up the app (actually closed by x-ing out in the multitasking bar) all of my information was deleted (all notes and information entered for each league). I made the developers aware of this and they’ve informed me that a fix has been submitted. They also promise an iPhone version (minus the checklist) available soon.

I'll definitely be using the app in preparation for my drafts, but I'll likely use something else as the app I use during the draft itself. As a hardcore player of fantasy football, I keep track of more information than the app allows me to input.
