Back to the Future Episode 3 isn’t the strongest but fans will still want it.

Looking at episodic content individually isn’t strictly fair on the plot progression or the development of the game involved. In the case of Telltale Games’ current style of releasing games – typically five episodes across six months or so to form one larger game – each title is so intertwined that it wouldn’t be worth buying a middle episode if the player hasn’t already become invested in the previous episodes.

In the case of Back to the Future Episode 3, the puzzles and general experience is a little short but the title forms the important role of providing the mid point of the game. As any Telltale Games fan knows, the third episode tends to be the weakest but it also sets the scene nicely for a great conclusion.

Assuming players have already played through the previous two (and they really should if they want to enjoy the game), in typical messing up future style, Marty McFly has found himself back in the present but with things very, very different. 1986 is now a totalitarian state akin to George Orwell’s 1984 and obviously Marty needs to fix the timeline for everything to be OK again.

The storyline is quite interesting stuff and certainly hooks the player. Strong voice acting features once more also with Christopher Lloyd providing yet another great turn as Doc Brown. While Marty McFly isn’t played by Michael J Fox, it’s still a pretty good performance by the voice actor.

The problem lies in the lack of puzzles, making for a pretty short experience (only a couple of hours). There’s a lot of talking and plot progression but puzzles are few and far between. When they are there, they’re pretty simple too, meaning that the player never really falters.

Back to the Future Episode 3 isn’t the strongest episode thus far with seemingly all the focus placed on plot progression rather than offering clever puzzles. It’ll still keep players interested though and has certainly piqued my interest ready to try Episode 4.
