Back to the Future Episode 4 is a mixed bag of ideas. Offering weak puzzles, the storyline is pretty interesting at least.

Following on from Back to the Future Episode 3 comes the penultimate episode in the series: one that ups the ante a tad in terms of story progression but feels a trifle dull elsewhere.

There is much to find familiar here which carries mixed blessings. Players find themselves whisked back to 1931 for the third time with Marty finding himself trapped in Hill Valley. The main premise of this episode is all to do with repairing the timeline in the past, right down to breaking up a romance involving Doc Brown. It’s a decent enough storyline but one that still suggests it’s waiting for a true unveiling in the final episode. While new locations are added, the concept of being in 1931 yet again does feel a little recycled also.

It’s a similar tale with the puzzles. Most that feature in this episode feel a little predictable and lacking a crucial dose of excitement. Hints are a little vague at times and this is certainly an episode that ranks as one of the harder titles. On the plus side, the puzzles do gel with the story rather than feel added in for the sake of it, but they’re just not interesting enough. Many puzzles tread the predictable path of simply fetching one item and taking it elsewhere rather than capturing the Back to the Future spirit fully.

The puzzles let Back to the Future Episode 4 down but it’s the storyline that keeps players engrossed. Without spoiling too much, there’s some interesting character development to be seen here thanks to some conflict between Marty and Doc Brown. It still feels like an episode that’s holding back though, presumably in preparation for Episode 5 in the near future. Players wanting to see the full storyline will feel compelled to buy this but they won’t be as thrilled by this as they deserve to be. Hopefully the final episode will make amends.
