Space Leap is the latest title to hit the iPhone from Pakistani developers we.R.play; it takes hints from many successful puzzle-based games on the platform. However it also adds a little ambience into the mix, akin to something like Osmos — but can a mixture of mind-numbing puzzles and blissful relaxation really work in the same recipe? Let’s see.

As the name suggests, Space Leap is set in space. That’s the obvious part, and this particular ‘space’ is very well presented — a combination of beatiful but dark backdrops alongside bright and colorful foreground objects — but let’s get to the ‘leap’, that’s the fun part. The player’s job is to get an Earth-like planet from within the orbit of one star to that of another navigating around asteroids, nebulae and other things you might found in outer space. A big, yellow Sun-like star is the destination of the planet as it loops and catapults its way between gravity fields.

It takes a bit of getting used to and while there’s no need to rush through (planning certainly helps), there’s a time bonus on offer — plus it’s doing it quickly that really gives a great feeling of self satisfaction. There’s also a few little extras to help improve a high score, those being three smaller and darker stars spread throughout each level — collecting all of these, while not necessary to progress, will certainly give a boost up the leaderboards somewhat. This is where the game’s longevity comes in, not only with leaderboards and achievements across both Game Center and Open Feint, but the fact it always feels as though a level could’ve been finished more efficiently or completely. This offers an incentive to replay, as will the promised future updates that’ll increase the number of levels which currently sits at fourty-three.

It’s great gameplay, and there’s plenty of it there, meaning that for just 99 cents Space Leap is worthy of anyboy’s attention. And to answer my inital question about the relaxation stuff working — it does. There’s some real nice ambient music in there, which complinents the gameplay by really focusing one’s heart, body and mind. Ok, maybe not that extreme, but I believe most will get my drift. Definitely give Space Leap a look.
