Besides being a big technology fan, I’m also an even bigger movies fan. My DVD and Blu-ray collection increases nearly weekly and it’s all getting rather unwieldy. Some days I look at a store’s sale and try to remember which DVDs I actually own. It’s not exactly a problem that deserves sympathy by any means but it is one that deserves a solution. Movie Profiler sets out to solve all those problems and, despite the odd stability issue, it quickly becomes a rather important app for film fans.

It takes a moment or two to get to grips with Movie Profiler and a simple overlay tutorial upon first opening would have been convenient. A tap on My Collection and the plus icon and things quickly become clear. Adding movies is easy enough and provides an attractive result. Movie Profiler uses TMDb to retrieve boxart and relevant film information. If a photo isn’t available then users can always add their own. This is unfortunately where stability issues come into play. I found no matter what I did, choosing to view more details then adding from there, caused the app to crash. I could still quick add by swiping the title name but it did make for some minor limitations.

Further options emerge with the ability to enter information as to whether the DVD or Blu-ray has been lent out to someone, providing an ideal way to check the status of any disc. Ratings can also be added for every film and it’s possible to list titles according to the highest rating – an ideal method for users wanting to watch a good film. Those wanting to share their collection can also share from within the app via Facebook or email, with similar functionality available for a Wishlist area. Having added hundreds of films to a collection, no one wants to lose all that information so being able to back up via iTunes is certainly a welcome feature.

Excluding the annoying crash issues, Movie Profiler is a pretty ideal movie collating app. It’s simple and to the point with strong search functionality ensuring that it’s always easy to consult, whether it’s by film name, plot or cast. It’s a testament to the strength of the app that even despite crashing, I still find it worthy of a high score. Hopefully a future update will fix the stability.
