In some quaint corner of the world, a young boy has watched as his father raised a flock of sheep. Now the father has to go to town and sell the wool from the sheep and it’s up to the son to look after the flock. However, where there’s sheep, there’s wolves and Save Our Sheep is no exception. Players must use various tools and traps to help the son protect their flock from ravenous wolves.

The player’s main weapon is a rake that they crack over the wolves’ heads by swiping down on the screen. After a few knocks over the head a wolf will get dizzy. Once dizzy, the wolf can be knocked off the screen by swiping up. The goal is to protect all of the sheep form the wolves by making them dizzy, then knocking them off of the screen.

The rake is not the only weapon at the player’s disposal, though. During the game, the sheep can be sheared by tapping on them, and their wool can be used to purchase special weapons. There are various special weapons to choose from like an exploding barrel or a bicycle pump that inflates wolves up until the simply float away. Some of the weapons are used a single time, and others are placed to attack automatically. There are also several different types of wolves that must be dealt with differently in order to get rid of them in the quickest way possible.

The entire game plays very similarly to Plants vs. Zombies and if there are players out there who have exhausted what that title has to offer, they may want to check this one out. The game takes place on a more open and randomized field of play, but the enemy waves and active tower defense gameplay takes a page from the popular PopCap game.

The animation of the wolves and the sheep is very well done, and players will enjoy the game’s whimsical feel. The similarities to other zombie-based tower defense games is unmistakable, but Save Our Sheep feels more like an homage than a rip-off. Whacking wolf after wolf over the head with a rake can get a bit tedious, but the game does it’s best to vary the gameplay with kooky weapons. Save Our Sheep is a polished game and it does bring some unique mechanics to the tower defense genre.
