Every once and a while a game comes along that exhibits the perfect mix of random quirkiness, a well designed experience, engaging gameplay, and attractive art. While these games are rare, they are always such a pleasure to find and play. Flapcraft is one such game and while at first glance it may not seem like it, the game has a surprising depth and will quickly have players hooked.

In Flapcraft the player takes control of what can most aptly be described as Evel Knievel’s Viking ancestor as he jumps logs off a ramp and glides them through the air. The player controls the log-ridding Viking by tilting the device back and forth trying to get the log to act as aerodynamically as possible. Flapcraft is organized into groups of levels and each level has a specific task that must be accomplished. Some levels call for the player to glide a certain distance, some require the player to reach a certain altitude, in others the player will need to perform a specific series of maneuvers.

At the end of each level, depending on how well the player performed the required tasks and how well the overall flight was, the player is awarded a number of points. These points can be used to purchase upgrades for their flying log like rockets, wings, and navigational instruments that will allow the player to glide higher, faster, or with more control. As the log becomes more aerodynamic the player is able to reach new areas of the environment. This exploration and discovery is a large part of what makes the game so enjoyable. The environment is beautiful and the scenic (and sometimes humorous) Viking inspired backgrounds are a joy to uncover.

Splitting the game up into levels with varying goals instead of simply having the player try to reach ever increasing distances helps keep the game fresh and allows players to play the game in digestible chunks. The game is perfectly suited for a mobile platform and makes great use of device features. The game’s art is so well done that it is easy to forget the game and just watch the Viking waving his arms to balance on a log flying over a forest. This is a simple game that is easy to enjoy and it is well worth a try.
