Whether it’s true or not, when playing Ball Towers HD, one may get the sense that they are playing an engine demo. Players are presented with graphics that are very pretty technically but also nondescript and sterile with music to match. It’s almost like “here’s this marble rolling game to quickly show off what this engine is capable before someone finds its true potential.” However, that’s all conjecture. Regardless of whether or not it deserves such flashy graphics, the actual game of Ball Towers HD is perfectly serviceable.

Anyone who has played Marble Madness, Super Monkey Ball, or any other game where the point is to roll a ball into a cup will be right at home with Ball Towers HD. Each of the 45 levels, split across three difficulties, presents players with a looping ramp and by tilting their iPad, players must navigate their marble down said ramp. The designs of the ramps themselves are fine but not mind-blowing by any means.

Each level can be breezed through in less than a minute, but since faster scores yield more medals, there is an incentive for players to return to stages they’ve already completed. Also, later levels do offer a decent challenge. If the ball falls off the edge once, players get a second life represented by a neat rewind animation. However, many times the windmill hazard that knocked the ball off the first time will just do it again.

Luckily, there’s no challenge in learning the controls. Tilting the iPad to roll is smooth and responsive. Since the ball is locked on a rail though, on easier levels the game sometimes seems to play itself. Harder levels like the advanced pack and the upcoming expert pack definitely require some skill however.

Rolling through Ball Towers HD is a pretty, pleasant diversion. It just doesn’t leave that much of a lasting impression. At $0.99 it probably doesn’t have to but it would still be nice if it did.
