“The sky is falling, the sky is falling!” Never before have the words of Chicken Little rang more true than during a playthrough of Transgaming Studios new arcade game, KULA BLOX. From moment one players are put in control of a rapidly descending creature with an insatiable appetite for blood. Okay, maybe a thirst for blood part may be a bit of an exaggeration, but it is sure is bent on being the first creature to hit the ground and will feast on any poor beast not smart enough to get out of its way.

In KULA BLOX the concept is fairly simple: eat all of the cube shaped creatures that are smaller before hitting the ground. As more spam shaped bricks of flesh are consumed, the player’s avatar will become larger, which will in-turn allow it to devour even larger animals. The larger the player becomes the faster they begin to fall as well, adding to the high score strategy component of the game.

Things are not all fun and dandy in the world of mid-air feasting, however, because other predators are on the hunt as well. Larger mammals like to sneak in from above and try to knock players off course, while also eating any other potential prey on screen. All it takes is a single unprotected touch from these beasts and one of hearts will be deducted from the life bar. Take a wild guess what happens when there aren’t any more power bars? That’s right: GAME OVER.

There are several other elements that come into play as KULA BLOX progresses, but having several different unlockable characters, complete with their own unique power-ups, really doesn’t modify the core focus or overall mechanics of the game. What does change from stage to stage are the different goal totals needed to proceed to the next level. Though this does help vary things up slightly, it almost feels like other than a different backgrounds and animals, there is very little depth or variety on display. This is not to say that the game is not fun by any stretch of the imagination, it just feels like the SAME fun over and over again.

Never has the circle of life been so much fun to experience firsthand. Despite being repetitive, KULA BLOX has something fun and addictive at its core that will keep players hooked. Hardcore gamers may tire of the game fairly quickly, but those looking for a quick casual fix should definitely take it for a test dive.
