Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Five games for the price of one? Surely a bargain? We delve into just why it is.

$0.99 for 5 games? It’s almost not worth me reviewing such a collection. Sure, Corona Indie Bundle might not have the greatest games ever made but at that price, it’d be silly not to give it a try. There’s even the potential of a sixth game being unlocked once the app reaches 100,000 sales.

First up is The Secret of Grisly Manor, previously reviewed on this site in a fairly positive light. A year later and it’s still a sound adventure game, firmly located in the Myst genre of adventuring. Players wander around a creepy mansion and attempt to unravel the mystery behind a missing grandfather. Puzzles are occasionally a little obtuse but they’re consistently interesting.

Chicken’s Quest is a puzzle game that requires some quick thinking. Players must help a flock of chickens travel from one side of the screen to the other, while avoiding numerous obstacles. Simple obstacles exist at first, while later problems like fire, bombs and crates need be managed. At times, it feels a little disjointed with occassionally glitchy controls. Somehow, Chicken’s Quest doesn’t feel quite as fun as it should, but included in this bundle it works as a fruitful distraction.

Walkabout is a different kind of puzzle game. Players have to walk around a level, picking up magic stars. There’s no way of returning to a space previously walked on, however. This means that some careful planning is required and makes for a quite fun experience. Throughout the 64 levels, Walkabout is fun and challenging making it a worthy addition to the collection.

Robot 99 is the weakest game in the collection. Players have to keep robots from falling out of the sky by dragging them then releasing and launching them upwards into the sky. Controls don’t feel as accurate as they should and it just makes for an uninspiring time, in sharp contrast to Float.

Perhaps it’s because of the physics behind Float but despite offering a similar type of game to Robot 99, it’s much more satisfying. All the player has to do is keep the balloons from falling to the bottom of the screen and being popped by spikes. It’s as simple as that but works perfectly making for a title that five minutes turns into an increasing amount of time.

Each of the five games is connected easily enough with all the games offering an easy to find exit option to ensure that players don’t have to keep quitting out all the time, simply to get back to the original menu. Everything’s fast to load, which is a bonus. Each game might not be powerhouses of the App Store but together, it makes for an entertaining package. The Corona Indie Bundle is a worthy purchase indeed.
