Fontography is a photography app for the iPad that allows users to make custom “fontographs.” With the ability to create custom letters and numbers, Fontography really lets the creative mind take hold to make unique word art.

There is a wide range of photography apps available in the App Store for both the iPhone and iPad. I have used many of them but Fontography lets me do something unique that I have not seen before. The mission of this app is to allow users to create their own unique "fontograph,” which is essentially a word art image made from actual pictures taken of objects in the shape of letters and numbers. The app is very easy to use and personalized "fontographs" can be generated within seconds.

All that is required to create a new word art image is to input some text in the top bar. I've created several images with this app using only one word or even a short phrase. Once the text is entered, hit "go" on the keyboard and Fontography will populate the word using the pre-set pictures in the app's library. From there the option is given to choose a picture to represent a letter in the text or simply leave the word as the app generates it. Once the style of each picture is selected, there are additional options to add some different color schemes and borders to surround the entire text.

The best part about the app is that it allows users to take and upload their own pictures of letters that they have created. While at dinner, I was able to snap an overhead view of my milk glass sitting on a tablecloth to make a letter "O.” I ended up using this custom letter to form the word "Hello" in the sample screen shot in this review. The app really allows for opportunities to let creative minds run wild to make some fun word art images. Fontography integrates with Twitter and Facebook to allow users to share their works of art with the world. Finished "fontographs" can also be saved to the iPad camera roll or sent via email.

The user interface of Fontography is so easy to use and it only took me a few seconds to get the hang of it. Each letter in the pre-loaded library comes with fifteen different images. With so many options and variations available, it's very easy to create a true, custom word art image. There are many uses for the images once they have been made, and I have even though about throwing some into Power Point presentations or Word documents.

One thing that I did notice that I wish this app had was more options for punctuation marks. I love a good exclamation point, but it seems that Fontography does not have any images that look like exclamation points. The main images that are used to stand in the place of punctuation marks are hearts and stars. The point of the picture still gets across with the stock photos, but it would be nice to see some options for punctuations marks. I guess the app leaves it up to me to be creative enough to come up with my own images to punctuate my text.

Free and paid versions of Fontography are available but, as customary, only the paid version will allow the use of all the app's features. In my opinion the price tag is a little steep, but I'm sure there are plenty of users out there that would be willing to pony up the dough for the full app. The app usually goes for $2.99, but is currently on sale for $1.99 in celebration of being one of the top apps in many countries. Once the sale is over, the app will revert to the original price. Overall, Fontography is a very well-built app that can be utilized for various different reasons and enables the user to experiment and have fun.
