The prices of in-dash navigation systems range from a few hundred dollars to a cool thousand or two with installation. The price of GPS Navigation 2 iPhone app is $.99 and I’d be hard pressed to find a reason to spend more than that. The GPS capabilities of the iPhone are robust enough that there really isn’t a reason to pay more.

Furthermore, this navigation app offers an optional offline mode upgrade to download a map for a country for $2.99, continent for $3.99 or the entire world for $9.99. That seems to be a very good bargain. If the driver is within cell range, there is no need for these additional maps. Also, the app comes with an automatic free voice download for true voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation.

When loaded, the app displays five options on the start menu, including a big blue arrow right in the middle that allows the user to jump straight into navigation via address, take me home quick button, favorites, recent destination and so on. The app is powered by OpenStreetMap, a well-known open source project based on more than 450,000 mapping enthusiasts around the world.

Beyond navigation, GPS Navigation 2 features a map that allows the user to do a quick search from their current position or type in an address for a quick route. For me, this app was very easy to punch in an address with a small amount of effort. The main menu also displays a help button for support and upgrades button for more maps.

The category button is very useful and brings up points of interest or POIs ranging from quick launch buttons for gas stations, parking, hotels and airports among others. On every screen, there is a miniature button centered on the bottom that brings the user back to the main menu.

The only thing missing from this app is the ability to customize the home menu. For instance, instead of having the help button, I would have swapped it out for my favorites.

However, the GPS Navigation 2 iPhone app is a solid, feature rich navigation companion that provides a very intuitive user interface along with just about every important feature the more expensive in-dash units offer. This makes for a winning combination and makes this app an easy recommended buy.
