Tuesday's Daily Brief

Tuesday, May 31, 2011
Arianna Huffington: Like the millions of Americans who hit the road this Memorial Day weekend, I also got away for a bit. My travels took me to Providence, Rhode Island to receive an honorary doctorate from Brown University during its commencement ceremony. An honorary doctorate is, of course, only ceremonial, but I actually do feel like I received an education (a compressed one to be sure, but a profound one) courtesy of the astute and moving speeches given by the students chosen to speak at the ceremony -- including one about an epiphany of sorts involving squirrels, whose behavior offers scientific proof of the evolutionary basis of altruism (how's that for a must-click hook?). It's a lesson especially worth remembering on a weekend devoted to recalling the sacrifice of those who have given their lives in defense of ours and to honoring those who continue to do so.

David Bromwich: Obama, Bush, and the Patriot Act

Sam Harris: Morality Without "Free Will"
The concept of free will is a non-starter, both philosophically and scientifically. There is simply no description of mental and physical causation that allows for this freedom that we habitually claim for ourselves and ascribe to others.
Cynthia Macdonald: Promposals
Unlike my doomsday prom invitation, these elaborately popped questions are dead romantic and can be kind of expensive, too. They are proof that chivalry abides.
Neal M. Blitz, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S.: Are High Heels Really Bad For Your Feet?
High heels and pointy-toed shoes have the stigma of being bad for feet, but this does not seem to stop women from wearing them. Are women unaware of the possible resultant foot deformities that are associated with these particular shoes?
Alan Schram: Why Gold Is Rising
Gold prices have been rising, and many experts cite demand from the growing economies of China and India as the reason. But that's wrong. Gold is trading higher because of loose monetary policy and the purposeful devaluation of the US dollar.
