Captain CupCake and the Donut Disaster Review

Our Rating: ★★★☆☆ :: GLAZED OVER
iPhone App - Designed for the iPhone, compatible with the iPad

No, this game is not about an off duty cop in search of a snack, but it may have been a bit more enjoyable if it was. Ultimately, this is just a simple platformer with a sugary sweet veneer.

If there were some magical land built from mountains of sugar and founded upon Homer Simpson-esque dreams of edible everything, that pastry paradise would need a hero to protect its delectable citizens. Which brings us to Captain Cupcake, the unseemly “super” hero that protects Isla Cocao, an island of the confectionary sort. However, not everyone loves Isla Cocao as much as Captain Cupcake; and judging by his slightly pudgy physique, the Captain enjoys the island very much. The Veggie Villains are determined to steal all the island’s donuts and Captain Cupcake is hot on their tails, reclaiming all the donuts he can.

The game consists of fairly run-of-the-mill platforming across various dessert and candy inspired backdrops. Each level is covered in donuts that Captain Cupcake must collect in order to complete that level and move on to the next. The free game comes with two 24-level sections unlocked and three more 24-level sections of varying difficulties are available via in-app purchase. Each level has a different sugary theme and a different type of Veggie Villain in it’s levels. Time is of the essence this game. The more quickly a level is completed, the more stars are awarded.

The level design in this game is disappointingly uninspired and consists of nothing more than flat, floating platforms placed around the level with collectable donuts strewn across them. The level designs change slightly from section to section, but not enough to make any one section significantly different than the others. The game also suffers from clunky controls that are much more awkward than they need to be.

Where Captain Cupcake really shines is in its character animations. The Captain is beautifully animated and the ironically overweight super hero comes to life on the screen as he bounds up and down each level. Whether he’s bending over and huffing to catch his breath when he stops running or falling on his face when he runs off of a platform, Captain Cupcake makes this game. In many ways, it would almost be just as fun to run the Captain around an empty world and watch him huff and puff.

While this game might not have much to offer in the way of gameplay, it oozes sweet charm all over the place and if you like what you see in the screenshots posted here you may want to give the game a closer look.
