Approaching Feevo HD with a certain amount of cynicism would be understandable. After all, it looks like a Bejewelled clone and the app store is overflowing with those. It’s even the app equivalent of a Facebook game and offers in-app purchases. Everything about it suggests formulaic mediocrity, at least on paper. In reality, it might be nothing new but it offers a gaming experience that is addictive enough to make its players forget everything as they game.

Feevo HD goes one further than the Match Three genre, offering Match Four. It makes a difference as after years of matching three, it’s all too easy to forget and focus on three gems rather than four or more. Two game modes are on offer with Fever and Blaze. Fever has no time limit, instead offering an action limit that can be restored after completing certain activities. Blaze mode sets a strict time limit to proceedings with speed being the important part rather than careful gem clearing.

In both cases, players must match as many sets of four or more gems as possible with the more matched at once, the more points and other powers are unlocked. Huge combos can be accrued with relative ease and it’s immensely satisfying hearing the voiceover exclaim ‘fever’ at you as and when it happens. It all feels very arcade like in nature and brings back many a fond memory of arcade puzzlers. There’s not a hint of slow down either with the graphical style consistently sharp and responsive throughout.

Throughout the game, power-ups appear to help boost scores and a levelling up system also exists which further unlocks new power-ups and features. It’s compelling stuff for an already addictive title. Feevo coins are gained through playing the game and can in turn be exchanged for power-ups. Players always have the option of buying coins also for real money but it’s not really essential.

While Feevo HD treads very familiar ground, it does so with style, offering up an addictive combination of its own. Gaining experience is simply the icing on the cake no doubt keeping players hooked for a long time to come. It’ll certainly be sticking around on my iPad.
