Who can resist the opportunity to shoot a zombie in the head with their finger? ZombiePanic offers plenty of this kind of fun.

Zombies are a bit of an oversaturated commodity in the gaming world. I’m not complaining exactly as a big fan of all things undead. It does feel a little like variety would be welcome however. Still, while ZombiePanic doesn’t offer a heap load of innovation, it is pretty darn fun. It’s a little like a simplistic version of the Time Crisis series in fact, offering fast paced shoot em action.

There’s no story to speak of other than the need to save survivors from the perils of the zombie invasion, but the fun stems from switching one’s brain off and just enjoying the twitch gaming experience. Each stage offers a similar thrill: moving from left to right around the arena and tapping on a zombie to shoot at. As any zombie fan knows, shots to the head are what count and ensure an one hit kill, while body blows take a bit longer. Survivors are foolish people, all too keen to leap in the firing line so for the sake of a better high score, players must resist the temptation to shoot absolutely everything that moves. In many levels, the poor humans can turn into a zombie before the player’s eyes making some careful spotting vital to success.

After each level is completed, there’s the possibility of buying upgrades to either health, weapon drops or kevlar armor. Completing extra missions unlocks further upgrades such as better weapons. These extra missions tend to consist of tasks such as don’t shoot any survivors, or maintain a certain level of health. They’re relatively simple to accomplish on normal difficulty level, thus making for a more well rounded experience. Bosses also play a role, requiring more careful firing and a tiny hint of strategy in the player’s thinking.

In all, there are more than 30 weapons to use and 5 skill upgrades to help tackle the two dozen different types of zombies so there’s enough here to keep players keen. While ZombiePanic might lack brains, it’s by no means a pointless endeavor. It’s excellent fun which is pretty much all that anyone could ask for from such a game.
