Fujitsu F-07C is a Windows 7 PC and a smartphone Posted: 30 May 2011 10:48 AM PDT Share/Bookmark As Intel works to make the Atom suitable as a smartphone chip over the coming years, Fujitsu has gone and stuck one of the existing Atoms inside a phone as a second processor. The reason? To allow it to double as a portable Windows PC. The phone was originally unveiled earlier this month, but Fujitsu held a press conference late last week with the phone on display and some more details of the final spec. The F-07C contains a Texas Instruments OMAP chip for smartphone functionality. Fujitsu has then added an Oak Trail Atom for running Windows 7. In order to keep power use down below 1.5W that chip has been capped to run at just 600MHz. The result is a dual-mode handset that can act as a smartphone running a Symbian OS, but with the option to boot up Windows 7. You can also slot the phone into a dock giving access to a monitor and add a keyboard and mouse for the true desktop experience. It will be quite a slow experience, though, with the chip running well below 1GHz. The switch between Symbian and Windows 7 is meant to be seamless. You push a button and the other mode is activated. Both chips have their own memory meaning in order to transfer data between the two you have to use an SD card. As just a smartphone, the F-07C is quite competent. A 4-inch touchscreen (1024 x 600), 1GB RAM, 32GB on-board storage, 5.1 megapixel camera, and a QWERTY keyboard. It manages 600hrs standby time in mobile mode. Switch to Windows 7 and that drops to 2 hours.
