At its most basic, gaming is all about reacting quickly. OK so it’s also about figuring out solutions to puzzles but let’s focus on the twitch nature of gaming. Just take a look at the games of old like Pong, Space Invaders and Pac-Man. They’re all about reacting quickly. Twisted Maestro approaches gaming in a similar twitchy light, even if that is where the comparisons end.

In Twisted Maestro, players must tap the relevant piano key quickly enough so as to keep in time with the tune. That’s pretty much all there is to it. Reacting quickly is easy enough at first with the initial 10 levels not proving to be overly taxing. It’s the latter 10 levels that provide much more of a challenge. Twisted Maestro really can get tough. It’s difficult in the way that means players will keep trying though, even if they’re bound to fail with the frightfully difficult final level. Response times are fine with Twisted Maestro so players won’t feel cheated at all. Lightning fast reactions are vital though.

At the end of each level, players are scored accordingly for accuracy rate as well as given a numerical score too. Unfortunately there’s no GameCenter, OpenFeint support or even Twitter/Facebook functionality so there’s no way for the player to show off their scores.

Twisted Maestro does offer slightly limited gameplay as once players have reached their reaction limit, there’s not really much else to do. Another mode of play offering fastest reaction tests or something similar might have been a nice addition. Then again as Twisted Maestro is a free app, it’s hard to really fault it. As a brief distraction, it makes for a reasonable enough form of entertainment. Just don’t expect it to stick around on your iOS device for very long.
